  • The ultimate iteration of the Z4

Overview

Two-seat, S54-powered coupes and roadsters were nothing new for BMW when the E85/6 was released in 2006, and they certainly took the ‘don’t mess with a good thing’ approach with the Z4M; it retained the later Z3Ms’ E46 M3-derived S54 engine, six-speed manual transmission and factory limited-slip differential, but dragged the aesthetics and interior kicking-and-screaming into the then-current Bangle design language. The result? A staggeringly pretty car that was arguably far more usable than its predecessor, with the performance and rarity to boot, thanks to the short 2-year production run between 2006 and 2008.

This 2006-registered E86 coupe is finished in the timeless shade of Interlagos Blue (as per the launch cars) over a black leather interior. Having been with the seller for a short amount of time (he notes that it is a reluctant sale due to having acquired a dog and sadly the Z4M isn’t the ideal poochmobile. This Z4M coupe boasts some tasteful upgrades including CSL-style wheels, KW suspension and upgraded 4-pot front brakes, building nicely upon the standard E85/6 ethos without overdoing it

Interior

  • Black leather interior

  • Both seats look to be free from any rips, tears or damage

  • The interior would benefit from a thorough valeting to bring it back to its best

  • We note some typical degradation to the soft-touch covering around the gearstick, steering wheel centre, steering column and other touchpoints

  • The leather door cards are beginning to wrinkle with age

  • There appears to be an area of wear/staining on the outer passenger seat bolster

  • The passenger door card armrest area is stained

  • In the rear, the boot is clean and tidy with no obvious staining or damage

  • Whilst the cabin may need a deep cleaning, there does not appear to be any damage or unsalvageable wear, with both seats remaining free of any rips and no obvious broken or missing trim

  • No reported electrical faults or issues

Exterior

  • Launch-spec Interlagos Blue bodywork in very good order

  • BMW CSL-style wheels - a common upgrade that suits the Z4M very well

  • Upgraded KW suspension gives this Z4M a fantastic, yet usable stance

  • We note some scuffs to the lower front bumper / splitter area

  • The front bumper and mirror casings wear the usual light smattering of stone chips, commensurate for a vehicle of this age

  • The paintwork, on the whole, looks to be excellent, with only a few light wear blemishes such as miniscule scratches and abrasions visible upon close inspection

  • Being particular, the paintwork on the offside rear wing/upper arch looks to have a more ‘orange peel’ finish than the rest of the vehicle

  • Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres, date code 2020/21

  • All four wheels are in great condition, with only one or two minor blemishes visible up-close and a small patch of kerbing on the offside rear wheel

Mechanical

  • 3.2-litre ‘S54’ naturally aspirated inline-six engine, producing 338bhp

  • Six-speed manual gearbox with factory-standard limited-slip differential

  • Rear-wheel drive

  • Under the bonnet, the engine looks tidy with no obvious faults or leaks making themselves known

  • KW suspension upgrade fitted in 2021

  • Brembo 4-pot ‘big brake’ kit

  • Reported to be in excellent mechanical health, with an ‘intoxicating’ soundtrack and no known faults or issues

Summary

Eminently more usable than both its predecessor, the Z3M, and its stablemate, the E85 Z4M roadster, the E86 allows for year-round use and enjoyment, with the added bonus of increased rigidity that comes with a fixed roof.

Offered for sale in very good external condition but perhaps in need of a deep interior clean, this Z4M would make for a fantastic daily driver or weekend toy, so long as there are only two passengers, neither of which is a dog(!)
