2019 BMW M5

The F90 M5 was a controversial car when it was first announced. The first M5 to come with 4-wheel drive, and the first M5 with an automatic gearbox was not what the cognoscenti wanted to hear. ‘It will be heavy. It will be clumsy. What about weight distribution?’

In fact BMW M blew everyone away. Weighing in, for a start, at 40kg lighter than its predecessor, the F10 M5, the F90 was incredibly nimble for a car of its size. Weight distribution was excellent and the 4 wheel drive system turned out to be astonishingly good, with a healthy rear-wheel bias and the option to revert to 2-wheel drive if required, at the touch of a button. The 8-speed ZF gearbox is a bit special, too, with faster gear changes than possible in a DCT box, and with ZF guaranteeing their gearbox can handle all the power you can throw at it, nobody drives the F90 M5 without coming away impressed. In fact, the F90 M5 turned out to be a masterpiece on all fronts – frighteningly quick, with fantastic road manners and presence, comfy, and very rewarding to driver. In all, a true return to form – an M5 for the new 20s.

With 0-60mph coming up in just 2.8 seconds, powered by a 4.4 V8 with twin turbos, producing just under 600bhp and a whopping 750Nm of torque – 70 more than the outgoing F10, you’re not going to be short on power either. Once again, BMW M produced a car where each element is carefully calibrated against the other components that go together to make the whole seem, well, so right. A hit with the press, owners, and in fact the ML team, you really can’t understand just how good this M5 is until you’ve driven it. This car will be sold with a brand new MOT, new front tyres, service fully up to date and in rude mechanical health. A full BMW warranty is also available. With a high spec – options include comfort access, adaptive headlights, Harmon Kardon etc, and in a popular colour combination, this lovely F90 M5 really is a gem.

Cared for by a serial M5 owner (his previous E39 M5 was a regular at Munich Legends for over a decade) this M5 is now sadly being sold due to illness.
