Overview
An award-winning model, the NC generation Mazda MX-5 embraced enough technology to make for a more refined and usable proposition than its forebears whilst still being an utter hoot to drive thanks to its brilliantly balanced, rear-wheel drive handling. It was both more versatile and comfortable than earlier iterations while still feeling analogue enough to satiate the desires of drivers looking for a certain level of engagement from their roadsters.
Debuting in 2005 and remaining in production for ten years the Mazda MX-5 NC looked more butch than its predecessors thanks to flared arches and larger wheels but in reality it wasn't that much bigger overall. The few inches it did gain though translated to a more roomy interior and additional boot space, both of which make the NC a more usable model day to day. Add in the power folding hard top and it all feels a bit more sophisticated.
Available with either a 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre four cylinder, either of which is plenty powerful enough thanks to the car's low weight, you really can chuck the NC into corners with a confidence that's usually reserved for much more exotic and indeed expensive fare. Gearbox choices were between a five or six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic but those hankering after a more authentic and engaging experience should look towards the manual-equipped cars, like this particular 2012 Venture Edition for instance.
The thing is though, this isn't your standard Mazda MX-5 NC. In addition to the usual Venture Edition enhancements, including Havana Brown heated leather seats and matching door trim, air conditioning, cruise control and satellite navigation, to name but a few, this car has also been fitted with renowned MX-5 fettlers BBR GTi's Super 200 tuning kit. This delivers extra response, power, drive-ability and excitement with the car now producing a dyno-proven 202bhp (199.3hp). With a tweaked exhaust and a set of MeisterR coilovers alongside other suspension upgrades, this MX-5 comfortably sits head and shoulders above any standard example. Throw in an impressive service history and a long, advisory-free MOT too and it's chicken dinners all round.

Summary
Representing outstanding value the Mazda MX-5 Mk3 could very well be the sweet spot for many. Easier to live with and less prone to rust than the previous two iterations, it remains an excellent and handsome roadster. Fun and accessible, the Mazda MX-5 NC can take care of daily duties during the week and come alive at weekends on your favourite B-roads and this particularly well-maintained example embodies those attributes admirably with everything turned up a notch or two thanks to some tasteful performance modifications.
