There is a particular lineage at Ferrari that matters more than most: the long-bonnet, front-engined V12 berlinetta. From the 365 Daytona to the 550 Maranello and F12berlinetta, it is the configuration that arguably defines the marque’s identity.
The 812 Superfast packing an often monstrous naturally aspirated V12 producing the thick end of 800 bhp is rarely considered subtle or sophisticated. However, this purposely low-key pairing of Grigio Titanio with Cuoio leather and perfectly judged interior carbon options is spot on.
The 6.5-litre V12 gives you 789bhp and 529lb ft, driving the rear wheels through a quick-witted seven-speed paddleshift gearbox and via a whole suite of electronic systems to ensure such incredible figures are genuinely useable on road. Among them is what Ferrari calls ‘Virtual Short Wheelbase’, but which we know as four-wheel steering. The key figures are sub-3.0secs to 62mph and a 211mph top speed.
Simultaneously frenzied and approachable, the 812 is a remarkable achievement built around to the greatest engine of modern times. It’sis not subtle, nor especially restrained. It is excessive in power, in speed, in theatre. And that is precisely the point.
Today the 812 GTS's place in Ferrari's lineup is occupied by the 12 Cilindri. A successor though it is, it's a different type of car - less intense, less raw, the V12 a more distant cog in its constitution. In a way, then, the 812 Superfast was never succeeded, and it certainly hasn't been beaten.
