Overview

If ever a car defined all that is right about the engineering talents of BMW's M Division, it's the E46 M3. Produced between 2000 and 2006, the third-generation M3 struck gold with its balance of power, performance and usability. Under the bonnet sat the S54, a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated straight-six good for 343 bhp at a heady 7,900 rpm, one of the highest specific outputs of any production naturally aspirated engine at its launch. Allied to a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, with keen handling from a chassis that still rewards today, the E46 M3 was compact enough to feel agile yet spacious enough for genuine daily use. And those subtly flared arches and that purposeful stance still draw admiring glances over two decades on.

This particular 2003 coupe is finished in Carbonschwarz Metallic, a shade that reads near-black in shade but reveals a rich, deep-blue undertone when the light catches it, and it makes an immediate visual impression. The body lines are straight, panel gaps are consistent and the exterior presents well for a car of this age, with a set of CSL-style 19-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels an eye-catching addition. Inside, the cabin features the rarely-seen combination of sand beige Nappa leather seats with dark burl walnut trim throughout.

There’s also some considered upgrades: an aftermarket carbon fibre cold-air intake duct is fitted together with braided brake lines and the steering wheel has been re-covered in Alcantara. Documentation accompanying the car includes the original book pack and a document folder containing records from throughout the car’s life. If you’re in the market for an E46 M3 (and if not, why not, really?) then this car presents a very tempting proposition.

Interior

  • An Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel with M tri-colour stitching presents in excellent condition with no visible shiny or worn patches

  • Dashboard is free of cracks or warping across both driver and passenger sides

Exterior

  • Finished in Carbonschwarz Metallic, a deep, dark shade that reveals a blue-black hue in direct sunlight

  • Overall, it’s in good condition with no obvious rust in the wheelarches and the underside in good condition

  • Body lines are straight and panel gaps appear consistent along the flanks with no visible signs of previous accident repair

  • Several small stone chips are visible on the bonnet's leading edge and centre section

  • Noticeable paint deterioration and chipping along the bonnet's trailing edge where it meets the windscreen scuttle, with bare metal showing through in places; a respray of this area would tidy the front end considerably

  • Both headlight units are the factory xenon projector type with integrated clear indicators; the nearside lens shows some light internal hazing consistent with age

  • Both rear light clusters are intact, undamaged and free of moisture ingress

  • Rear bumper lower section on the nearside shows a concentration of light scuffs and scratches consistent with general road use

  • Overall, the exterior presents well for a 23-year-old E46 M3

  • An outstanding manufacturer recall relating to the passenger airbag is flagged on the DVSA record; this can be addressed free of charge at any BMW dealer

  • With fresh rubber on all four corners and recent maintenance documented, it's ready to be enjoyed

Summary

A Carbonschwarz E46 M3 with sand beige Nappa leather and walnut trim is not a combination you’ll come across often. And with an Alcantara M-stitched wheel and CSL-style 19-inch alloys, carbon fibre intake and braided lines, it’s been further tweaked. We think it’s a compelling spec and a modern classic that should be well into appreciating territory. On top of that, it’s going to be a riot to drive. Get your bid in now.
