Overview

When it comes to the Porsche 911 many fans covet the turbocharged variants, and rightly so. Of course, both naturally-aspirated and forced induction versions of the iconic German sports car have their merits but there's just something about a 911 turbo that gets the juices flowing. Harking back to the original turbo 930 that broke cover in 1975 blown 911s continue to be a staple of the line-up such is the inherent appeal.

But going back to earlier versions it's perhaps the 996 turbo, debuting in 2000, that potentially offers the most bang for buck. Not only was the 996 the first 911 to feature water cooling as opposed to the traditional air-cooled engines of prior models but it also featured a brand spanking new platform and although purists at the time derided the styling it is now widely regarded as an excellent entry in Porsche's ever impressive oeuvre.

Introduced three years into the 996's production cycle the Turbo was fitted with a 3.6-litre, twin-turbocharged flat-six engine producing a rather impressive 414bhp. Coupled with a four-wheel-drive system the 996 Turbo could accelerate to 60mph from parked in around four seconds, which is still rapid today, 26 years later. With various styling tweaks and a wider, more aggressive stance it looked the business too.

This low mileage 2005 example comes to market fresh from an MOT pass as well as a recent bodywork refresh to address any minor imperfections and currently presents in excellent condition as a result. Complete with impressive service history and a “tome” of paperwork (to use the vendor's parlance) the car has clearly been cherished and very well-maintained, evinced by the vendor's preference to always keep it attached to a trickle charger, to never take it out in the rain and to store it in a heated garage. So, if you're after a superb representation of a mid 2000s modern classic 911 Turbo that's reportedly in rude health then it might be time to call off the search.

Summary

With its powerful, race-derived engine the 996 Turbo certainly has impressive performance credentials but it also has presence. Not only that but the 996 generation is one of the more practical and easier to live with incarnations of the 911, truly making it one for the ages and this particular example, with its low miles, excellent service history and stunning overall condition is a bit of a peach.
