Description

The Aston Martin DB4 Series I was launched in 1958 at the London Motor Show as the first iteration of the all-new DB4 line, marking a decisive break from earlier Aston Martin models. Designed by Carrozzeria Touring using its patented Superleggera construction, it introduced a sleek, modern Italian-influenced shape combined with a new platform chassis built at Newport Pagnell. Early cars are distinguished by their frameless windows, distinctive grille, and minimal bonnet scoop, along with a comparatively sparse interior reflecting its grand touring focus. Production of the Series I was limited to 149 examples, making it one of the rarer standard DB4 variants; of these, 76 were built in right-hand drive, primarily for the UK market.
Technically, the DB4 Series I debuted the Tadek Marek-designed 3.7-litre twin overhead camshaft straight-six engine, producing approximately 240 bhp, paired to a four-speed manual gearbox. The car featured advanced engineering for its time, including four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension, and a live rear axle located by a Watt linkage, contributing to strong road holding and refinement. Performance figures were impressive for the late 1950s, with a top speed close to 140 mph and 0–60 mph in around 9 seconds, positioning the Series I as a true high-performance grand tourer and setting the foundation for the later, more developed DB4 series and ultimately the DB5.
We are delighted to present for sale this exceptional Aston Martin DB4, a rare and highly significant example, believed to be among the earliest of the coveted Series 1 cars, distinguished by their unique features, including frameless doors, a larger air scoop, and rear-hinged bonnet. Factory records indicate that this is just the third right-hand drive DB4 produced at Newport Pagnell. Notably, the car was originally fitted with a “PP” engine number, denoting “Pre-Production,” further confirming its status as an extremely early and important production example.
Initially retained by Aston Martin as their London demonstrator, it was subsequently delivered to its first owner, Dolcis Ltd of Great Dover Street, London, on 15th October 1959.
In the early 1970s, the car was acquired by the renowned Aston Martin specialist Richard Williams, founder of R.S. Williams. Having completed his apprenticeship at Aston Martin in 1961, when the DB4 was still in production, Williams went on to maintain the road and race cars of actor and comedian Peter Sellers before establishing R.S. Williams in 1968. Today, the company is regarded as one of the world’s leading Aston Martin specialists, with unrivalled expertise in servicing, engineering, fabrication, and race preparation.
During his ownership, Williams developed the DB4 into an accomplished fast road car, personally competing with it in numerous Aston Martin Owners’ Club events and hill climbs. The car was upgraded with a later, more powerful 4.0-litre DB6 engine, complemented by a Vantage-specification triple Weber carburettor setup. Further enhancements included subtly flared front and rear wheel arches to accommodate wider offset wire wheels. As such, the car represents one of the earliest and most authentic interpretations of a ‘fast road’ DB4, developed by one of the most respected names in the field.
Following Williams’ custodianship, the car passed to a Mr Laffan, who owned and cherished it for over 30 years before it was sold in 2016. In more recent years, the car has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration, returning it to outstanding condition. The work included a full engine rebuild to 4.2-litre specification and conversion for unleaded fuel, ensuring both enhanced performance and usability. The restoration was carried out by respected Aston Martin specialists Pugsley & Lewis and Prestige Restorations, at a cost in excess of £222,000. The car was refinished in Ferrari Blu Scozia with a beautifully retrimmed interior in Vaumol Tan hide.
Today, the car is presented in wonderful condition and is accompanied by an extensive history file, including ownership records, factory build sheet, Heritage Certificate, historic MOT certificates, original buff logbook and BMIHT documentation. Additional features include factory air conditioning, power steering and discreet Bluetooth connectivity.
A rare and highly desirable DB4, combining early production significance, documented competition history and previous ownership by one of the marques leading experts. It stands as a superb example of Aston Martin’s heritage and offers its next custodian the opportunity to enjoy a truly special motor car.
