Description
We are delighted to offer this 2022 build Porsche 911 RSR Tribute for sale.
This is not quite your usual sales description for this rather remarkable build, indeed more of a feature, and one well worth taking time over. This is the story of one man’s ultimate Porsche project and the “culmination of a lifelong passion,” AKA ‘Schtroumpf,’ a homage to this RSR Tribute’s vibrant GlasurBlue, a factory option colour from 1972-73.
As an introduction, we’ll let Schtroumpf’s creator, US-born, but now UK and France based, David Alstadter, take up the story: “My love for Porsche was ignited in my childhood with a ride in a 1973 911S, and since then, I’ve dreamed of creating the ultimate 911.
‘Schtroumpf’ is that dream made real. This is not a replica, but a ‘vision’ of a 2.8 RSR road car with track abilities, in the engine spec, as raced at the Targa Florio, 3.0 MFI, but in a touring style and built with an open chequebook.
The goal was to build the perfect ‘period RSR looking 911, mainly for road and sometimes track use,’ that could, in short order, obtain FIA papers for historic racing, blending the aggressive aesthetic of the 2.8 RSR with the usability of an RS Touring interior and modern AC, LED lights, etc.”
If there’s a clue to the ambition and the outcome of this build, it’s “open chequebook!” And that’s not David showing off, it’s just a matter of fact. Indeed, just a cursory glance over this amazing RSR rep is enough to convince, from the 917-style brake calipers peeking through the wide Fuchs, to the magnificent injection stacks feeding the twin-plug flat-six.
This is indeed a no-expense-spared build, and the price to create a similar Porsche today would be significantly more than the asking price of this car. Oh, and we would encourage you to check out this link to David’s forum post on the Pelican Parts website, which fully documents his Porsche history, including some in-period pics of David squeezing into the driver’s seat of Mark Donohue’s Can Am 917!
In The Beginning
Well, there has to be a start, and the starting point is – or was – a 1971 Porsche 911T, looking perfectly innocuous in Light Ivory, and sourced in Holland (although originally hailing from the San Francisco area in the States) and for which David still has the original bill of sale and comprehensive history. It looks a bit different now, though! All part of the ‘journey’ for some Porsches.
The Dutch connection is important, because very much at the heart of David’s ultimate RSR recreation is Differs Group – formerly known at the start of the project as Twin Spark Racing – renowned in the world of classic Porsche for its early Porsche restoration and racing builds.
The T was deemed a solid enough starting point but predictably threw up a few surprises along the way. If you want to see the gorier details, then again, check out the link. Completely disassembled, taken back to bare metal and sandblasted, the shell was treated to a KTL – cathodic dip – coating that provides long-term rust protection, before being built up to RSR spec using original RSR spec steel and composite panels, and painted in period-correct Glasur Blue.
At the very heart of ‘Schtroumpf’ is the engine – a 3.0-litre, mechanically fuel-injected, twin-plug, flat-six, built by APP Racing Engines and producing 310bhp at 8000rpm, featuring Carillo rods, Capricorn Pistons, Schrick valve gear and high-butterfly MFI throttle bodies. It certainly delivers the horses, as dyno printouts testify. It’s not an all-out screaming race engine, though. Torque has been factored in too, with a wide torque curve starting meaningfully with 245lbs/ft at 3000rpm and peaking with 315lbs/ft at 6500rpm.
If you like facts and figures, then there are carefully curated diagrams and charts showing in gear power figures, torque v revs, RPM v road speed and more, in the bulging build file that comes with this remarkable car.
Gearbox and drivetrain? Enter EB Racing and an exotic magnesium cased 915 five-speed shifter, completely rebuilt and upgraded to handle the engine’s power, with a short ratio gear set for acceleration, 930 Turbo bearings for longevity, RS style cooling and ZF plate type limited differential.
The suspension features Bilstein coilovers and RSR-style arms. The brakes are absolutely authentic, finned four-pot calipers front and rear, with an SCRS dual-piston adjustable brake bias pedal cluster. The fat Fuchs are shod with sticky Michelin TBs, and the wheel studs are titanium.
When finished, David zeroed the odometer, which now reads 7,333 kilometres, which, compared to so many reps that we see, is proof of this RSR’s driveability and David’s exacting vision. Testimony to that is the ‘Touring’ style interior with black perforated leather trimmed ST seats and electric air conditioning, essential these days if you’re going to use a car like this in the summer, without suffering!
On The Road
Just because all the above ingredients would suggest that it is going to be quite an experience, experience also tells us that it isn’t always the case… but not in this case! Sure, we would say that, but again, we point you to the mileage. David has put some in because this car just begs to be driven, and because it’s a joy to drive.
Again, not always the case. How many racy replicas have we driven with engines that might have the power, but only clear their exhausts at peak revs, making them a pain in the proverbial on the road. The graphs, the power and torque curves don’t lie. Yes, it will rev to 8000rpm, but there’s torque and tractability too.
To Sum Up
To be honest, there’s just too much to this build to squeeze in here, even for this ‘feature length’ description. It’s a special car, and it needs to be seen and driven to be truly appreciated. David has done the hard work, has driven and enjoyed it all over Europe on road and track. Now it’s someone else’s turn. It could be you!
