Overview
There has always been an air of exclusivity surrounding any Alpina. A feeling that these are truly exceptional cars. From the early 3.0 CSL Coupe and more modern B3 and B10 models, to name but a few, an Alpina badge denotes something special. From modifying BMW engine parts to becoming very much a part of the Bavarian business in 2022, Alpina has consistently fettled BMWs to produce some stunning machinery over the years and the D5 is no different.
Based upon the venerable sixth generation F10 BMW 5 Series the D5 may look like just another modified Beemer to the untrained eye but for purveyors of perfection the enhancements made by Alpina go deeper than a few decals and a front splitter. Arguably cooler and considerably more exclusive than the corresponding M5, the D5 not only has the performance credentials, but thanks to that diesel engine it's surprisingly economical too, despite producing a whopping 347bhp from its twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six.
That translates to a 0-60mph time of around five seconds and a top speed of 171mph, all whilst returning almost 50mpg, making this super saloon now rather relevant in the modern age of economically minded motoring. With re-tuned suspension and the usual Alpina refinements the D5 is consummately poised and incredibly comfortable to drive but mash your right foot into the carpet and everything gets suitably lairy.
This particular 2012 model comes to market in excellent condition throughout and looks stunning in its Alpina Blau Metallic paintwork over tan leather interior colourway. Wholly original and complete with an impressive history file, stamped service book and a long, advisory-free MOT the car has clearly been meticulously maintained and cherished throughout its life with the most recent inspection having been carried out in March this year. If you value discreet pace, comfort and economy, then it’s hard to think of a better option.

Summary
The Alpina badge is coveted for a reason, adding a certain level of refinement and a healthy dose of exclusivity to BMW's best models and this D5 presents as a really rather impressive example. Fast, economical, supremely comfortable yet incredibly purposeful, it's a supremely rare beast that reportedly drives as good as it looks. Add in the excellent service history and relatively low miles and you really are on to a winner.
