Overview
There’s much argument in the car world about the perfect two or three car garage. But what if you need one car that can do pretty much everything, and do it well? Your options suddenly become very limited.
Thankfully, during their slightly bonkers “why not try it” period, BMW decided that what the world needed was an E61 5-series M5 Touring with a 507bhp, naturally-aspirated 5-litre V10 shoehorned in the front. Can you imagine a car designer suggesting such a thing these days? They’d be escorted out of the building almost immediately. They were right though, because the E61 M5 is a fabulous thing and neatly answers the “do I only need one car” question.
Of course, the answer is a resounding yes. You do only need one car, and this is it. Wailing, F1-inspired soundtrack, dynamism by the bucketload (it’ll keep up with the saloon around the Nordschliefe) and 1,650L of luggage space with the seats down. That’s er… three St Bernards and a couple of Dalmatians. Or half a dozen Labradors, we think. Measuring boot capacity in dogs is a thing, right?
Anyway, the point is that it’s a lot. A lot of engine, a lot of space, a lot of luxury and a whole lot of fun. Understandably but unfortunately, the tuning brigade did rather like them. This means that a lot of M5s, both saloon and Touring flavour, met a gaudy and tasteless end. Which is particularly sad when it comes to the Touring as it’s such a rare beast – they only made 20,589 of them worldwide, with the vast majority being left-hand drive.
You’ll be unsurprised to hear that we were quite delighted when the owner of this particular gem approached us with a view to auctioning their car. Not only is it unmodified, original and presented in rather spiffing condition throughout, but it has a great service record, low mileage (under 60k is barely broken in for one of these), long MOT and a quite magnificent specification.
Ah yes, the spec. It’s a belter. In a world of greys, silvers and blacks, the original owner of this beauty decided to tick the “Indianapolis Red Metallic” box. Whoever you were, we salute you, because it looks utterly superb on the M5 Touring. And it’s rare, vanishingly so. Production numbers indicate only 11 cars IN THE ENTIRE WORLD were specified with this particular exterior hue. That number is probably down in single digits now. Add to it the gorgeous Sepang Bronze Merino leather upholstery and you have a car that’s really rather special.
Carrying lots of things at a blistering pace has never been quite so stylish.

Summary
If an E61 M5 is on your “one day I’ll own one” list (and it should be), then this is the perfect opportunity. The chances of finding another in such excellent, unmodified condition, are slim. The chances of finding another in such good condition, in right hand drive and with a similarly fabulous specification are pretty much zilch.
Rare, fast, practical, collectible and with the kind of spec you can only dream of, this is a genuine “it’s now or never” moment. You know what to do.
