1989 Mercedes-Benz

One of the last of the great W107 Mercedes SL models built and one of the finest, a UK supplied 500 SL, the ultimate model which has covered only 8,500 miles in single family ownership from new until last year that remains in excellent original order throughout. Finished in the great shade Azurite Blue with grey leather interior, options fitted include cruise control, rear seat, headlight wash/wipe and illuminated sun visors.

Jacksons, the Mercedes Benz main dealer for the Channel Isles ordered the car when new on behalf of the Scott family, owners of the Jackson Motor Group. They were well-known motoring enthusiasts with a notable collection of significant Mercedes Benz models and clearly saw that a final “end of an era” version of the W107 would be a welcome addition.

The car was supplied by Jackson’s in Guernsey on the 6th of September 1989 as noted in the original stamped service book and registered with the cherished number JSY 13. It remained, virtually unused in the collection, indeed by March 1997 it had covered only 514 miles as noted in a service stamp from Jackson’s. At this point the SL was used more regularly with regular servicing by Jackson’s until 2005 when it was placed back into the collection with 8,000 miles recorded.

I managed to purchase the SL last year and sold it immediately to a regular Hairpin client following a recommissioning service. A mayor service was completed with all fluids and filters replaced, as were the fuel pumps, tyres and radiator. In addition, the original Becker stereo was replaced with the excellent retro Blaupunkt Bremen unit with new speakers in the original apertures. The original unit accompanies the car.

The SL has remained in dehumidified storage with Hairpin since purchase by the last owner. It remains original and immaculate in all respects and drives superbly as only a low mileage original example can. All books are present in the correct plastic clear wallet as is the toolkit and the spare wheel remains unused.
