Description
When Porsche unveiled the 930 Turbo in 1975, it redrew the boundaries of what a road car could be. Born from the 934 and 935 racing programmes, the turbocharged flat-six was violent, unforgiving, and utterly intoxicating – a car that demanded respect and rewarded those who understood it. By the time the 3.3-litre intercooled variant arrived in 1978, Stuttgart had refined the formula just enough to make it liveable without diluting what made it extraordinary. Larger brakes from the 917, a revised KKK turbocharger, and 300 brake horsepower turned the 930 into the definitive supercar of its era – a car that could embarrass Italian exotica costing twice the price, then drive you home in the rain.
By the mid-1980s, the 930 had become an icon. It was the poster on the bedroom wall, the car in the driveway of anyone who had truly arrived. Four decades on, it remains one of the most visceral driving experiences Porsche has ever produced – and among the most collectible.
This 1985 example, prior to the most recent keeper taking custody in 2024, has been in the same ownership for over twenty-three years, and is offered now as a reluctant sale.
Those with a keen eye will note that this 930 does not present quite as one might expect. A full 964 Turbo-look conversion with Speedline wheels was carried out approximately twenty-five years ago – sympathetically executed, entirely in period, and untouched since. The result is a 911 that carries the visual stance and presence of a 964 Turbo, underpinned by the raw, analogue character of the earlier 3.3-litre mechanical package.
And it is that mechanical integrity that matters here. Brakes, suspension and engine remain as Zuffenhausen intended. A comprehensive top-end engine rebuild and reseal was completed in 2017 alongside a new clutch and flywheel. The car has been maintained exclusively by Porsche main dealers and marque specialists throughout its life, accompanied by an immense history file documenting every piece of work in chronological order. A speedometer change at 98,000 miles is fully recorded within the file, now on 21k miles.
In the context of current 964 Turbo values – a car like this warrants serious consideration. Genuine 930 Turbo mechanicals, over two decades of single ownership, and the unmistakable silhouette of Stuttgart’s widowmaker at a fraction of what an equivalent 964 commands. This is not a consolation prize. It is a proper turbocharged 911 with real provenance, ready for its next custodian.
