The 992 GT3 Touring is an irresistible combination of timeless 911 elegance atop the purest expression (relatively lightweight, turbo-free flat-six, rear-drive, minimal electrification) of 21st century Porsche performance.

The Touring Package is simply the GT3 with the standard car’s extrovert design turned down a bit for those looking for a touch more discretion without compromising driving performance. But hunkered low over its vast wheels you could wrap this thing in sack cloth and it would still ooze refined menace.

Despite all the superlatives thrown at this car’s chassis, it still plays second fiddle to the engine which is a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre having little in common with the unit found elsewhere in the 992 range and a lot to do with the one used in Porsche’s GT3 Cup racing car.

503bhp means the GT3 Touring will accelerate to 62mph in 3.4 seconds, and onto a top speed of 194mph. Ample.

The engine revs and revs, sounding more glorious the closer to that 9,000rpm red line you reach. Each upshift is brought home with an instant response from the deliciously slick 6-speed manual box, and the temptation to blip an equally snappy downshift just to hear that engine sing a little higher is often too hard to resist. It’s the area of the 911 that, once combustion engines are gone, we’ll miss the most.
