Description
1968 Lotus Elan S4 SE Drop Head Coupe // DOHC 1557cc We are proud to offer for sale this wonderful example of the S4 Elan DHC. Presented in the iconic Gold Leaf team Lotus colours with contrasting black leatherette interior. This particular car was manufactured in 1968 but not UK registered till 1976 so we can only presume she spent her early life in the channel islands or over seas. She was in long term ownership by a Lotus enthusiast and Club Lotus member, who cherished the car for many years including taking part in Lotus events such as the Guinness world record for the largest congregation of Lotus's The previous owner had enjoyed the car for 19 years! During this time the DOHC 1557cc engine was rebuilt and the original chassis was replaced with a revised poly coated version. Serviced regularly and maintained to a very high standard. She was originally black and was professionally repainted in 2005, (Paint work is still in excellent condition for its age). photos of this process are on file. The car performs just as she should, starting with ease and still feeling sharp and nimble on the road, with her Webber twin 40 Carbs pushing the fantastic classic Elan soundtrack as present as ever. Also benefitting from Mick Miller solid drive shafts, new rear bearings, new brake master cylinder, stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel fuel tank and matching Good Year tyres all round. Previously serviced and set up by Mike Bentley (Ex Lotus engineer). Headlights working as they should with no problems. Fully working original Clarion radio She has cover minimal miles in the last few years, although the previous owner drover her over 200 miles down to my showroom and she didn't miss a beat. Recently had a speedo replacement due to instrument failure so the mileage is now showing as just over 10,000 where she was previously just under 20,000. Lots of history but mileage not warranted. Lotus workshop manual also present along with a large folder of cuttings, invoices and information including a Club Lotus valuation from 2018 for £32,000. Only about 3000 Elan S4 cars were produced in total, with a small percentage being the SE version. The 'Special Equipment' version differs by having servo assisted brakes, an SE engine developing 118 bhp instead of 105 bhp, safety belts, a leather covered steering wheel, knock-on wheels with chrome embellishers, carpeted boot interior and Special Equipment badges. The Lotus Elan embodied the Colin Chapman minimum weight design philosophy. Technologically advanced at the time, with a DOHC 1557 cc engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, and 4-wheel independent suspension. Overall this is a beautiful example of an iconic British classic Advertised very competitively bearing in mind what she was valued at 8 years ago.
