Overview

There are many companies who will take your new car straight from the production line and personalise it, improve it and generally ‘add a bit more’. Some add little more than a set of wheels and some badges, others completely re-engineer vehicles from the ground up.

However, the sweet spot is occupied by one company and one company only – Alpina. Of course, they are now a BMW “in-house performance brand”. But when they operated outside of the full control of the suits from Munich, they produced some of the finest everyday performance cars we’ll ever see. These engineering wizards somehow took everything that was great about BMW, refined it and reimagined it as something familiar and yet wholly different.

For our money, the B3S Touring is the perfect distillation of everything that made this company great. Based on the F31 3-series, Alpina tweaked the powertrain and suspension setup to elicit even more power from BMW’s 3-litre BiTurbo inline-six (a thumping 435bhp/443lb-ft), maintained the fantastic, instinctive handling, yet somehow managed to make it ride like a limousine. Which shouldn’t really be possible.

Of course, Alpina also offered a bewilderingly comprehensive list of options for personalisation. And the original owner of this example has certainly indulged themselves. We get the feeling they looked at the list options list and just said “I’ll take it all, please and thank you”. Rather fortunate for whichever lucky so-and-so walks away with this stunning fast estate.

Gorgeously finished in dark metallic green over an individual cream leather interior, with a splendid maintenance record, long MOT and below average mileage, this ticks just about every box you could want ticked.

Don’t follow the crowd, eschew the multiplicity of SUVs and amorphous electric blobs on the market at the moment. This is true style. Timeless, practical, luxurious, unique and effortlessly powerful – vehicles this good don’t come on the market too often. Best get bidding then…

Summary

We adore a long-roof. We love it even more if it’s a bit on the punchy side. If it also happens to be an Alpina, well that’s just perfect.

But just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, this delightful machine reveals its dark metallic green over cream spec, along with a sterling service history. It is, quite simply, the perfect all-round vehicle, and naturally calls to mind the “all the car you ever need” cliché.

Cliché or not, it’s damn well true; someone is going to be walking away with a truly magnificent vehicle.
