Description
his Morris Cooper S carries a fascinating history, having been owned and raced by a Spanish privateer who competed extensively in the car.
Chassis number 851026 was first registered in June 1966 as a genuine UK home-market 1275 Cooper S, purchased new by Mr Francisco Navarro. When Mr Navarro later moved permanently to Spain, the Cooper S accompanied him and became the centrepiece of his motorsport passion.
An experienced and highly capable driver, Francisco competed with the car at a variety of circuits including Jarama, Monaco, Montjuc Park and many others. A collection of period photographs accompanies the car, though perhaps the most evocative shows Mr Navarro leaning on the bonnet at Jarama alongside his trophy a wonderful snapshot of this cars remarkable competition history.
Records from both the Automobile Club de Monaco and the Jarama Circuit archives remain with the car. Most notably, during the March 1969 Jarama race, Mr Navarro completed 15 laps against formidable opposition including Lotus Cortinas, BMW Tis and other Minis, recording a qualifying time of 2m 17s. Only four cars in class were faster.
As Francisco grew older, the car was stored in his barn in Almera. Following his death, ownership passed to his wife before the car was purchased by its most recent keeper a UK resident who travelled to Spain, met the Navarro family and subsequently re-imported the car to the UK. After Franciscos passing, the car was sympathetically restored by the family in Spain, with its provenance carefully preserved through accompanying documents and historical records passed directly from the Navarro family.
Once back in the UK, the new owner continued compiling the cars extensive history file while also refreshing its mechanical components. The car was entrusted to ALLITT Motor Services for a comprehensive engine and gearbox rebuild and upgrade using Swiftune components. Key works included:
Swiftune SW5-07 camshaft and valve springs
Engine bored to 1300cc
New pistons, timing chain, oil pump, water pump and bearings
New clutch
Balanced flywheel, clutch and crankshaft
Hardy Spicer differential outputs
Full machining of all required engine components
Dyno printout showing 77.8 bhp
The car has since been carefully maintained and dry stored. Both the paintwork and interior present very well, while retaining a charming patina that reflects the cars rich and authentic history.
