The Ferrari 550 Barchetta
Designed by Pininfarina, the 550 Barchetta is one of the most exclusive open-top Ferrari models of the modern era, combining classic Ferrari tradition with the technology of a contemporary Gran Turismo. The model was unveiled in 2000 to mark Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary and as a tribute to the legendary open-top front-engined Ferraris of the 1950s and 1960s, including models such as the 166 MM, the 250 GT California and the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider. The vehicle was based on the Ferrari 550 Maranello, whose elegant lines and V12 layout were already strongly reminiscent of classic Ferrari Grand Tourers. In contrast to the closed 550 Maranello, the 550 Barchetta was given an open body in the traditional ‘Barchetta’ style. Ferrari and Pininfarina deliberately opted for a purist concept with a soft top intended solely as weather protection. This was not designed for high speeds and emphasised the car’s character as an uncompromising open-top Gran Turismo. To compensate for the lack of a roof structure, the chassis was further reinforced and fitted with distinctive roll bars behind the seats. Despite these measures, the weight remained almost on a par with that of the 550 Maranello.
The 550 Barchetta was powered by Ferrari’s 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine with 48 valves, which produced 485 bhp at 7,000 rpm. The engine featured numerous technical solutions from Ferrari’s Formula 1 programmes, including variable intake geometry and electronic throttle control. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels via an open six-speed manual gearbox in a transaxle configuration. The combination of a naturally aspirated twelve-cylinder engine, a classic manual gearbox and an open cockpit made the 550 Barchetta a modern classic shortly after its launch. Visually, too, the 550 Barchetta differed from the 550 Maranello in several details. Characteristic features included the more raked windscreen, the special roll bars, bespoke alloy wheels and numerous model-specific details in the interior. Many cars were fitted with carbon fibre trim, sports seats with the Cavallino emblem embossed on them and a numbered plaque on the centre tunnel. Ferrari also equipped the Barchetta with a comprehensive range of comfort features, including air conditioning, electric windows and an audio system, ensuring the car remained suitable for long-distance driving despite its uncompromising appearance. Production of the Ferrari 550 Barchetta was strictly limited. A total of just 448 examples were produced, each individually numbered and bearing Sergio Pininfarina’s signature. Even at its launch, the model was regarded as a collector’s car, as it combined the classic qualities of historic Ferrari roadsters with modern technology. Today, the 550 Barchetta is one of the most sought-after Ferrari models of the early 2000s and is regarded as one of the last open-top Ferrari grand tourers with a naturally aspirated V12 and a classic manual gearbox.
