Overview

From its launch in 2004 to the end of production in 2012, the 997 established itself as Porsche's best-selling 911, and it retains that status to this day. Round headlights harked back to the much-loved 993, but the engineering underneath was anything but nostalgic. Two flat-six engines were offered from the start: a 3.6-litre in the Carrera and a 3.8-litre in the S, the latter producing 355bhp and 295lb ft. Paired with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, and with PASM as standard, the Carrera S delivered a 0-62mph time of around five seconds and a top speed of 179mph. That it did so while looking this good was almost unfair.

The Cabriolet added an electrohydraulic folding soft-top with a heated glass rear window, turning the 911 into a proper open-air sports car without significantly blunting the driving experience or everyday practicality. For enthusiasts who wanted the full 997 S experience with the wind in their hair and a manual gearlever between the seats, the Cabriolet remains among the most sought-after configurations.

This particular 2005 example wears Basalt Black Metallic over a Sand full leather interior, a colour combination that rewards a second look, the depth of the Basalt Black working well against the warmth of the Sand leather. It had three former keepers before arriving with the current owner in June 2020 and, in the six years since, it's seen limited use.

A new clutch in 2018 was followed by a boroscope and compression test completed in April 2020 which confirmed the bores clear of scoring; valuable reassurance for any Gen 1 997 buyer. Since then, the current owner has covered approximately 5,000 miles and had the car thoroughly looked after during his tenure. The detail is in the sections below, but nothing has been left to chance. Overall, this car has been properly maintained and presents a superb opportunity for its next owner.

Summary

This is a 997 Carrera 2S Cabriolet in an attractive specification: manual gearbox, naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six, rear-wheel drive, and open air. In Basalt Black over Sand leather, it looks the part too. Importantly, the bores have been scoped and verified clear, the mechanicals have been systematically refreshed by recognised Porsche specialists, and the paperwork runs right back to the original bill of sale. It's a car that looks to have been properly looked after. With summer ahead and fresh Michelins on all four corners, it's ready to enjoy.
