Description

We are delighted to present this exceptional and comprehensively restored 1959 Aston Martin DB Mk III for sale.
Retaining its original matching-numbers engine and specified from new with the factory twin-exhaust system and highly desirable ‘DB/D’ Special Series engine upgrade, this example is one of just 47 cars built to this coveted specification.
Produced during one of Aston Martin’s most celebrated periods, the DB Mk III reflected the marque’s success at the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours and was powered by the ultimate development of the Lagonda-derived twin-cam straight-six engine designed by Tadek Marek. Contemporary road tests were equally enthusiastic, with The Autocar describing the Mk III as “one of the world’s outstanding sports models.”
The DB Mk III also holds a unique place in popular culture as the first Aston Martin associated with James Bond. In Ian Fleming’s 1959 novel Goldfinger, 007 is described as driving a DB Mk III, with the chapter detailing his journey to the famous golf match against Goldfinger aptly titled ‘Thoughts in a DB III’.
Of the 551 DB Mk IIIs produced, the majority were built in left-hand-drive configuration. Aston Martin factory records confirm that this rare right-hand-drive example was supplied new through Brooklands of Bond Street and first registered in May 1959 to Dr Fullerton of Dorset.
Importantly, the car was specified with the rare ‘Special Series’ DB/D engine package. Distinguished by its triple SU carburettors, this factory performance upgrade increased output to approximately 180bhp and provided a top speed in excess of 120mph, representing a significant enhancement over the standard DBA specification.
Dr Fullerton enjoyed the Aston Martin as his daily transport for almost two decades, covering approximately 66,000 miles before selling the car in 1978 to its second owner, also based in Dorset.
Accompanied by an extensive history file documenting just six former keepers from new, the current owner commissioned a comprehensive, chassis-up restoration by recognised Aston Martin specialists, returning the car to the outstanding condition it presents in today.
The accompanying Heritage Certificate and original factory records confirm that the car was originally finished in Peony with a Black Connolly leather interior. Detailed photographic records of the restoration have been compiled into a hardbound volume, documenting every stage of the process. A substantial history file further evidences the quality and scope of the work undertaken, including a complete engine rebuild carried out by renowned specialists Oscelli.
Today, the car is presented in immaculate Dubonnet Rosso paintwork, beautifully complemented by its restored black Connolly leather interior, black carpeting, fully refurbished chrome brightwork and new Borrani wire wheels. The addition of discreet power-assisted steering further enhances usability, allowing effortless low-speed manoeuvring while preserving the character of the driving experience.
With comparable examples commanding significantly higher values, this beautifully restored DB Mk III represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of Aston Martin’s most desirable post-war grand tourers.
