Description
The Jaguar E-Type redefined sports cars upon its launch in March 1961. Its blend of striking design, innovative unibody construction, and outstanding driving dynamics was exceptional then and remains impressive today, as evidenced by its inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Its styling, created by Malcolm Sayer under the direction of company founder Sir William Lyons, was inspired by Jaguar’s Le Mans-winning D-Type race cars. The E-Type adopted the D-Type’s unibody construction, featuring a front subframe for the engine, suspension, and bodywork, bolted to a steel tub. This configuration was lighter and stiffer than the ladder-frame chassis of the era, resulting in superior driving performance. Production began in 1961 with two body styles: coupe and convertible. It is first equipped with a 3.8-litre overhead-cam six-cylinder engine. In 1965, Jaguar upgraded the engine to 4.2 litre with 265 horsepower, enabling 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph, while maintaining style and comfort. The 4.2-litre version also added a fully synchromesh four-speed manual, along with improvements to the electrical and braking systems
The E-Type is classified into three series, with Series I roadsters, such as the example offered here, consistently among the most desirable and valuable. This example was imported from the United Kingdom and has been restored and carefully maintained since its arrival in Hong Kong more than a decade ago. The E-Type remains one of the most iconic and recognizable automotive designs ever produced.
