Overview

The 2006 Porsche 911 Turbo (997) represents one of the most significant chapters in the model’s history, combining everyday usability with genuinely supercar-rivalling performance. Instantly recognisable thanks to its iconic 911 silhouette, wide-body stance, and prominent side air intakes, it also marked the return of the traditional-style headlight, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Fitted with the legendary 3.6-litre Mezger flat-six engine, this is widely regarded as one of Porsche’s finest powerplants, equipped with pioneering Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbochargers, the first application of the technology in a petrol production car, producing 473 bhp and delivering immense performance with remarkably little turbo lag.

This example is fitted with Porsche’s five-speed Tiptronic S transmission, which offered a surprising advantage over the manual version when new. By maintaining boost pressure during gear changes, the Tiptronic-equipped Turbo is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it marginally quicker off the line than its manual counterpart.

On the road, the 997 Turbo combines superb pace with exceptional composure, thanks to the intelligent all-wheel-drive system and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This provides impressive levels of grip and confidence in all conditions, allowing the car to transition effortlessly from a refined grand tourer to an extremely capable sports car.

• The rear boot spoiler operates as it should, automatically or via the button

• The original 19-inch alloy wheels have been refurbished during this ownership

• Unfortunately, the driver's side rear wheel does have some white worm under the lacquer

• The tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s, which all have a good amount of tread remaining

Mechanical

• 3.6-litre turbocharged flat-six

• Produces approximately 473 bhp and 457 lb-ft of torque

• The engine starts without hesitation and runs with no problems reported

• A Europipe sports exhaust has been fitted

• The engine was recently removed to attend to a leaking gasket, which wasn’t accessible with the engine in place

• At the same time, various hoses and brake pipes were replaced as a precaution while the engine was out

• A full service was carried out at 84,992 miles

• Five-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox

• This operates nicely with smooth changes, and the car pulls like a train through the gears

• New engine, brake and water hoses were fitted during the last work carried out

• The car stops in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal and no problems reported

• The 911 sits as you would expect, and no knocks or bangs can be heard from either corner of the car
