From its history, it appears to have under gone significant restoration and refurbishment in 2022.
The Big Bumper Mk2, 16v, GTI was the high water mark for VW’s legendary hot hatch, being widely regarded as the pinnacle of 80’s Hot Hatches. There is much online chatter about them as desirable and appreciating modern classics, a quick “google” reveals:
- The final 16-valve big-bumper models are currently the most sought after, and the market for really good, un-spoilt original cars is keen. - Classic and Sports Car.
- The Mk 2 may have suffered for not being the first Golf GTI, but in many ways it’s a better car: faster, more comfortable and more modern. Grab one before they are all gone. – Autocar.
The Mk 2 Golf was launched in 1984, including our cars little brother the 8v GTI. The 8V’s 110bhp, was soon eclipsed by the competition (205 1.9 GTI etc), VW’s response was the face lift, big bumper 16V, launched for the 1990 model year, raising power to 137bhp. Our example is a very late Mk2, registered in May 92, some months after the much derided Mk3’s UK launch.
J204CDT was supplied by J. Gilder Volkswagen Dealers, Sheffield and was first registered on 20/05/1992. It is presented in stunning Tornado Red, complimented by desirable Grey Rainbow Striped interior, it has covered only 98,047 miles from new.
Our iconic GTI is accompanied by a comprehensive and fascinating history file, it includes:
Original Service Book, containing 15 service records, the last for us at 98,043 miles. Including cam belt replacement at 94k miles in 2019.
Numerous MOT’s dating back to 1998.
A stack of tax discs dating back to 1998.
Loads of invoices for services, parts, restoration and repair dating back in 1999.
A data stick with hundreds of reference pictures and restoration photo’s.
Back in the day, the Big Bumper 16V, was fully loaded, and standard equipment includes: 5 speed manual transmission with the iconic golf ball gear knob, sports seats, central locking, tilt and slide sunroof, electric windows, power steering, disc brakes all round (calipers just re powder coated) our example also comes equipped with a period looking Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 hi fi, with DAB and Bluetooth.
Our GTI’s beautiful BBS RA alloys are clad in, correct fitment 185/55/15 Continental, Conti Premium Contact tyres, with 7-8 mm of tread front and rear.
Our mega rare 16v, comes with full book packs and wallet, BBS spare wheel, jack and brace, un-opened first aid kit, and two keys.

Many thanks for wading through our lengthy description, we believe it’s better to describe our cars fully. It is not in our interest to waste your time or ours with inaccurate descriptions. It does of course have the odd age related imperfection, but that would be churlish, its probably the best example currently for sale, and is guaranteed to draw a crowd and positive feedback from fellow aging “yuppies”!
Our Mk 2 Golf GTI 16v, really does tick all the Quick and Big Ltd boxes being: mega very rare in this condition, very cool, comprehensively maintained, and appreciating in value.
