1973 FORD ESCORT

The Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico was a homologation special released in November 1970 to celebrate Ford’s outright victory in the gruelling 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. It featured the strengthened “Type 49” rally bodyshell, a 1.6-litre Kent crossflow engine producing 86 bhp, and a 0-60 mph time of 10.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 100 mph. Produced by Ford’s advanced vehicle operations between 1970 and 1975 10,352 units were built in total.

The 1973 Ford Escort MK1 Mexico offered here at Autostorico is finished in Le Mans Green with Black cloth interior trim. Having been purchased by its current owner a lifelong Ford enthusiast in 2014. He then undertook a no expense spared restoration. Works started with the car being stripped included removing the engine and gearbox and stripping the whole body, before a bare metal respray. The car was also subject to a full mechanical overhaul including some sympathetic upgrades. The engine has been fully rebuilt by Harris Performance Engines to 1760cc and included converting to run on unleaded fuel. The gearbox is a 5 speed (original 4 speed box is still with the car) Attention then moved to the braking and the suspension, before a rewire and new interior trim including headlining carpets and seat covers.
