DESCRIPTION:

CSC are excited to offer for sale this superb and extremely rare Phase 1 Renault 5 GT turbo finished in gloss black, as advertised by Griff Rhys Jones in the 1986 TV commercial demonstrating the 0 to 60mph performance (if your old enough to remember)!!

The Renault 5 needs no introduction, especially the pocket rocket 80’s icon as spotted hanging out at the local McDonalds every Friday and Saturday night in GT turbo form, baiting the more common 205 GTi and Golf GTi’s to a dual carriageway drag race! Many of these once very common hot hatches didn’t survive for long 90’s with most being tuned to the point of engine destruction, making Renault 5 shaped holes in hedgerows or being stolen with a screwdriver from a pub car-park never to be seen again.

Today, the Renault 5 GT turbo is a very rare find, especially in phase 1 guise which only lasted from its 1985 launch until the phase 2 face-lifted variant in 1987 which would extend the models production through to 1991.

As with many things in life, we only realise just how special things are once they are gone and no longer around, and this is very true of the original GT turbo. With some inspiration from the rear engined, wide bodied 80’s rally focused Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2, the Phase 1 GT turbo featured aggressive body styling and 2 tone bodywork with many features which would be smoothed and colour coded for the Phase 2 cars in-line with current trends towards the end of the 80’s with most hot hatches.

These phase 1 cars featured grey bumpers and wheel arch extensions, with fake air intakes and grills aplenty, contrasting against the upper bodywork colour. And of course, no 80’s hot hatch was complete without lairy graphics, red stripes and in the R5’s case, turbo lag!

Prior to the huge resurgence of 80’s and 90’s hot hatch’s and the significant rise in values, the car suffered some light damage to the near side and was subject to an Insurance payout. Thankfully however the owner kept the car and had the vehicle repaired and restored back to superb original condition.

The 1.4 8 valve engine and turbo charger in the car are original and have never been removed or messed around with. The car retains its original phase 1 contrasting plastic body-kit and trim and period lower graphics and still sits on its original 13” rally inspired flat faced iconic alloy wheels. Although sunroofs were all the rage in the 80’s, most of them were sadly fitted by the selling dealership, and in most cases badly. This lead to years of owners trying to stop water ingress around the roof opening and in most cases, failing. Thankfully this example avoided the tin snips and leakage issues.

The car presents very well in its gloss black having been restored around 12 years ago whilst many of the trim parts were still available. The car wears the correct decals and badges and retains its original 13” alloy wheels with recently fitted (and difficult to source) Michelin tyres. If being accurate, there are a few areas of bodywork which could be improved fairly easily if desired, however the car is in a very presentable and useable condition, and ready to drive, show and enjoy.

Internally, the cloth interior is very much original with the plastics trim and switchgear remaining in superb condition. Due to the usual wear to the driver’s seat bolster fabric and the lack of replacement original material, the owner had the side bolsters re-trimmed in black leather which gives an OEM plus feel to the cabin whilst making the interior much smarter and hard wearing.

Another period feature is the OEM rubber over-mats, these give excellent protection to the red carpet and as any 5 GT enthusiast will know, demand a fairly hefty premium on-line whenever and if ever they come up for sale. The original jack and wheel brace are still located in their tool pouch in the boot and the (everyone should have one) ultimate document, the Renault 5 Haynes Manual (hardback edition) also comes with the car to help pass those sunny afternoons.

HISTORY:

The turbo was first registered on 25th June 1987 and was owned and cherished by its original owner for 20 years, thankfully escaping the Max Power treatment and abuse that so many were subjected to. The car passed through 5 further owners over the following few years until being purchased by the current owner in 2024 when the R5 becames part of a small private collection alongside other classics such as an air cooled 911 and a mk1 Golf GTi.

The car and has been a regular sight at various club meets and car show events such as the Bicester Scramble alongside much more exotic but no less attention grabbing machinery. The owners loss of storage has lead to the collection being reduced in size and some cars being placed on the market for sale.
