Unlike many cheaper replicas that utilise modified VW Beetle or Skoda Estelle chassis, this Martin & Walker is constructed on a purpose-built tubular spaceframe chassis, resulting in significantly improved rigidity, handling and driving dynamics.

Purchased in January 2024 from renowned 356 and 550 specialist Paul Foreman, this car has since benefited from further investment to enhance both its performance and drivability.

The lively 1,899cc air-cooled flat-four engine has been professionally tuned by a respected Volkswagen performance specialist, who described the engine simply as “a peach”. The result is a wonderfully responsive, free-revving power unit that perfectly suits the lightweight nature of the car.

To ensure the driving experience matched the engine’s performance, the gearbox was subsequently rebuilt by Paul Foreman. During the work, a missing gear linkage bush was identified and replaced, transforming the quality and precision of the gear change.

On the road, the car is tremendous fun. Lightweight, engaging and wonderfully analogue, it captures the spirit of the legendary 550 Spyder while remaining reliable and enjoyable to use. Wherever it goes it attracts admiring glances, conversations and photographs.

The car is supplied with a high-quality tonneau cover together with an aftermarket soft top. The hood is understood to have never been used by the previous owner and remains unused by the current owner, reflecting the fact that these cars are at their best enjoyed open to the elements.
