The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupé is one of the great modern AMG cars: front-mid-engined, rear-drive, naturally aspirated, long-bonneted, gullwing-doored and properly theatrical. The sharper evolution of the standard SLS AMG.
Its importance is bigger than the spec sheet. The SLS was the first complete car developed in-house by AMG, and it effectively bridged the gap between the Mercedes-McLaren SLR era and the later Mercedes-AMG GT. It also deliberately referenced the 1950s 300 SL Gullwing, not just through its doors, but through its proportions: impossibly long bonnet, set-back cabin, compact tail and huge sense of occasion.
The GT whilst not a separate generation was a meaningful facelift and dynamic upgrade. It replaced the original 563 bhp SLS AMG with a more powerful and more focused package, using the same basic M159 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, but lifted to 583 bhp, with revised 7-speed AMG Speedshift DCT transaxle and sharper AMG Ride Control Performance Suspension. Good for 199 mph and 0–62 mph in 3.7 seconds.
The engineering recipe is enormously appealing: a large-capacity naturally aspirated V8, a dual-clutch gearbox, hydraulic-feeling AMG aggression, rear-wheel drive and no hybrid assistance.
On the road, the GT feels sharper and more disciplined than the standard SLS. The steering is direct, the nose feels more tied down, the gearbox is more responsive, and the suspension control is improved. But it is still not a small, nervous, hyperactive supercar. It is a big-capacity, front-engined AMG with enormous traction, immense torque and a very clear preference for fast, open roads.
The engine is the masterpiece. It has that dense, hard-edged AMG idle, a muscular mid-range and a top-end that feels far more exotic than many people expect from a Mercedes V8. The SLS GT is part muscle car, part grand tourer, part supercar, and that blend is what makes it so distinctive.
Today, the SLS AMG GT Coupé is one of the strongest modern-classic prospects. The standard SLS has already matured into collectible status, but the GT is materially rarer, more focused and more desirable to an enthusiast who wants the best.
With the specialist market frequently citing the fact that just 10 UK RHD examples of the SLS GT came to the UK availability is incredibly limited and the cars rarely come to market.
For a collector or enthusiast buyer the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupé has all the right ingredients: landmark AMG status, 300 SL-inspired design, gullwing doors, naturally aspirated V8, rear-drive balance, limited UK availability and a shape that has aged superbly. It is not merely a fast Mercedes. It is one of the defining modern AMGs, and in GT Coupé form, one of the rarest and most compelling ways to own the SLS story.
