Launched at Geneva in 1989 as successor to the long serving R107, the R129 SL was a technical tour-de-force, with a pop-up rollover bar that deployed in milliseconds, a fully automated electro-hydraulic hood and a multi-link rear axle, all wrapped in Bruno Sacco's crisp and elegant bodywork

The 1998 facelift brought the final and arguably best iteration, the straight sixes giving way to Mercedes-Benz's all new M112 V6, the marque's first V6, with the 2.8 litre engine driving the rear wheels through a refined five-speed automatic transmission with around 200bhp

This 1998 SL280 is finished in Designo Mineral Green (814), a premium metallic finish that changes dynamically from Seafoam through Teal to Jade, with a matching hardtop and black electrically-operated soft top over black leather and burr walnut trim

It was first registered on 7 August 1998 and was optioned with climate control, cruise control, heated front seats and the desirable rear seats
