Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN.

One of the defining American sports cars of the 1950s, the first-generation Chevrolet Corvette evolved rapidly from a stylish boulevard cruiser into a genuine high-performance machine. By 1957, Chevrolet had refined the formula considerably, combining dramatic styling with increasingly sophisticated engineering and the performance credentials to challenge sports cars from either side of the Atlantic.

The 1957 model-year marked a significant milestone in Corvette development. Chevrolet's 283ci small-block V8 had grown in both capacity and output, while a four-speed manual transmission became available for the first time. Combined with fuel-injected variants and competition success in SCCA racing, the Corvette had firmly established itself as America's sports car.

This striking matching-numbers C1 is finished in the classic period combination of Venetian Red with contrasting white coves and a white convertible hood complemented by a matching red and white interior, perfectly capturing the unmistakable character of late-1950s American motoring. Signature styling features include the chrome grille, contrasting side coves, chrome hubcaps and wide whitewall tyres, all contributing to the model's enduring appeal.

It's fitted with the desirable dual four-barrel carburettor 283ci V8 producing 270bhp and, importantly, the sought-after four-speed manual gearbox. We understand it to be one of just 664 examples produced in this particular specification during the 1957 model year, making it a notably rare Corvette.

The car is understood to have benefited from an older frame-off restoration at some point in its life, with invoices indicating that substantial restoration and maintenance work was carried out by Mercedes Moscow in 2012. This work is believed to have followed the car's release from a German museum collection in 2009.

Imported to the UK in 2012, the Corvette has subsequently been maintained by recognised marque specialists, including Claremont Corvette, during previous ownership and there is a collection of older invoices in the history file alongside some Corvette manuals. Our vendor acquired the car in 2019 to join his private Collection and it's now appropriately UK registered as 3 CVY.

Few cars better represent the optimism and style of post-war American motoring than the C1 Corvette. Combining rarity, matching-numbers credentials, a desirable four-speed manual transmission and long-term enthusiast ownership, this 1957 example offers an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most important and recognisable American sports cars of its era.
