Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. Built at Subaru's Fuji Heavy Industries plant in Japan and honed by rally royalty, Prodrive, here in the UK, the Impreza P1 was always destined to become the hugely desirable modern classic that we rightfully see it as today. Built in a limited run of just 1,000 cars, every one featured the iconic Sonic Blue paintwork, and a plethora of upgrades and unique features. In standard guise the Impreza P1 could cover 0-60mph in 4.66 seconds, an impressive figure even now and it's easy to see why the P1 has gained such a cult following.

Based on the two-door bodyshell, with aerodynamics enhanced by Peter Stevens of McLaren F1 fame, beefier running gear and a fabulous suspension setup by Prodrive, the P1 has more in common with the legendary Impreza 22B than its larger four-door Impreza WRX contemporaries. Developed with British B-roads in mind, by the very same company which helped the likes of Colin McRae, Petter Solberg and Richard Burns win World Rally Championships, the 'Prodrive One' was intended to counter the wave of grey-import STi Type-Rs arriving from Japan.

Upgrades to the P1 were extensive, but not intrusive. The list includes a more powerful 280bhp engine (up 69bhp from a standard Impreza Turbo), mated to a five-speed manual transmission with longer gearing and ABS brakes. In addition to the 18-inch titanium-finish alloy wheels and rally-proven suspension, further upgrades include a big-bore exhaust and a quick-shift gear linkage.

We are delighted to be able to offer this 2000 model-year example, number #67 of the 1,000 UK cars, first registered on the 1st of June of that year to a Mr S Baugh of Beckley. It's finished in the iconic Sonic Blue with contrasting blue and grey cloth seats and both the exterior and interior still present exceptionally well, totally commensurate with the indicated mileage of 43,383. The healthy history folder still contains a letter from Jon Nealon, the marketing director of Subaru UK at the time, to Mr Baugh thanking him for him for the purchase of P11 WKD, and its original service book displaying 14 service stamps. Early servicing was carried out by Culverwell Cars of Robertsbridge, an authorised Subaru dealer, more recently by Subaru dealer KT Green Ltd of Leeds in July 2023 at 41,917 miles and not long ago by Eakin Bros of Londonderry on 25th June 2026 at 43,383 miles.

Within the history file is an invoice dated 4th February 2006 from Roger Clark Motorsport for an AP six-pot brake kit with red calipers (£1,570) and, at some point, the unmistakable EJ20 2.0-litre flat-four has evidently been uprated as there is a dyno sheet by Stewart Neal recording an impressive 348bhp and 357lb/ft of torque.

Certainly one of Subaru’s defining road cars, the P1 represents the sweet spot amongst the GC8 generation - a limited production, Prodrive developed, road focused evolution of the rally formula and increasingly difficult to find in this condition and at this mileage, particularly with the performance upgrades that offer that little bit extra. To fully appreciate what is on offer here, we welcome and encourage your inspection at our BRDC Classic Sale.
