Description
The fourth generation SL, denominated the R129, was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989. The beautifully engineered roadster was based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell and its sophisticated all-round independent suspension was complemented by a host of active and passive safety systems including electronic stability control, ventilated ABS disc brakes, adaptive damping, front airbags and an integral rollover bar that deployed in fractions of a second in the event of an imminent rollover.
The cabin was exceptionally well built and covered by a fully automated power hood, featuring memory seats, electric windows and mirrors, and an adjustable steering column. Yet, beneath the refinement sat a genuinely capable grand tourer. The SL500 was powered by Mercedes’ 5.0-litre V8 producing 326bhp and 332lb/ft of torque, paired to a five-speed automatic transmission. With 0–60mph in around 6.3 seconds and a top speed in excess of 150mph, it delivered effortless performance in a relaxed and composed manner.
With R129 production spanning from 1989 to 2002, the limited edition SL500 Silver Arrow was introduced as a celebratory end-of-production specification, paying tribute to Mercedes’ historic Silver Arrows racing heritage. Only 100 UK-market examples were produced, making it one of the rarest R129 factory editions.
The Silver Arrow specification comprises Silver Arrow ‘777’ metallic paintwork, AMG styling package, two-tone black and silver Nappa leather upholstery, engine-turned aluminium interior trim, Bird’s Eye Maple Black wood veneer, silver brake callipers, illuminated door sills and unique badging, creating one of the most distinctive factory R129 configurations.
Dating from 2002, this example is one of those 100 UK Silver Arrow cars, first registered on 29th January 2002 and presents in excellent condition having covered a modest and warranted mileage across just two previous owners. Since our vendor’s acquisition from modern-classic specialists City Classics in 2025, the car has covered approximately 500 miles in current ownership.
The car’s history file makes for pleasant reading, as it has benefited from a substantial programme of documented maintenance supported by invoices and specialist servicing. In 2024 alone, expenditure totalled approximately £5,785, including a full B-Service by Mercedes specialists, MB Automotive, and extensive preventative maintenance including a washer pump, alternator, air conditioning receiver dryer, two lower suspension arms, MOT preparation and two Continental tyres, alongside an air conditioning condenser sourced from Germany.
Further 2024 works include brake discs, pads and sensors supplied by Mercedes Leicester with wheel refurbishment and air conditioning re-gas. Additional maintenance includes ABS sensor replacement by The R129 Co, fuel pump and filter, and front brake discs with mirror glass, and the wheel trims were also replaced. An earlier major service in 2017 totalling £1,553 reflects consistent long-term upkeep.
The car presents particularly well throughout, with an immaculate interior showing minimal wear, and a bodywork condition rated approximately nine out of ten, with only minor age-related marks. There is no reported corrosion to the underside or wheel arches. For further preservation, the car was ceramic coated in November 2025 with a three-year protective coating applied.
Offered with a strong history file and careful long-term ownership, this Silver Arrow represents one of the more complete surviving examples of the R129 final edition. Limited edition Mercedes-Benz' have been appreciating rapidly in front of our eyes and this wonderful Silver Arrow represents serious value and would look at home anywhere you park it, particularly at motoring events where the connection with the late Sir Stirling Moss OBE is always appreciated.
NB. The cherished registration number 99 SK is not offered with the car but is available by separate negotiation.
