Description

The Series 2 model of the successful XJ6 and XJ12 range was introduced in 1973 and continued in production to early 1979. The revised range featured new bumpers and radiator grilles compared with the original Series 1 models. The idea of making a two-door pillarless version of the XJ saloon had surfaced very early in the cars development as Jaguar became aware of the growing American market for hardtop cars in the 1960s. Indeed, early XJ6 styling models were all two-door cars.
There was something of a hiatus between the announcement of what became a Jaguar classic, the 2-door XJ, and the start of serious production. When it was introduced to the press in the summer of 1973, Jaguar explained that the examples shown were prototypes, and no more would be made until the following year. In the event it was the Spring of 1975 before any went on sale, and the model remained in production for only two years.
Built on a short wheelbase floorpan, the distinguishing feature of the two-door coup was the pillarless window style with no doorframe or B-post. The doors were four inches longer than the standard saloon front doors. Further changes included folding front seats to allow access to the rear. All production coups featured a black vinyl roof covering, and the XJC badging on the boot lid.
The small numbers of cars built made it difficult to justify coup production and British Leyland made an announcement in September 1977 that production would cease. Production ceased on 8 November 1977 with just 10,426 two-door cars having been built.
Supplied new by Jaguar agents Heron in Stockport, this particular car was registered on 10th March 1978 and is among the last ever XJCs produced (13th last RHD Jaguar 4.2). Finished in Squadron Blue with Biscuit leather interior and the optional Kent alloy wheels, its first owner kept the car for just 3 months and covered less than three thousand miles. Since then it has had just 3 owners and covered a total of under twenty one thousand miles. The car was used sparingly up until 1999/2000 when it was taken off the road and put into long-term storage. The car has recently completed a full restoration and is in most excellent order, ready for its next owner to enjoy. Coming with a history folder featuring its original handbooks, service book, a number of previous MOTs and invoices. Supplied with 12 months warranty and breakdown cover.
