### 1960 Austin-Healey Sprite Mk I 'Frogeye'
There are few British sports cars more instantly recognisable or universally adored than the Austin-Healey Sprite Mk I. Affectionately known as the 'Frogeye', its distinctive styling, featherweight construction and wonderfully engaging driving experience have firmly established it as one of the defining sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s.
This superb 1960 example was originally supplied new to Missouri, USA, before being repatriated to the United Kingdom in 2016. Beautifully presented in its original factory coachwork colour of Old English White, it retains its period charm while benefiting from a meticulous programme of restoration and sympathetic mechanical upgrades that make it an exceptionally rewarding car to own and drive.
A comprehensive five-year, nut-and-bolt restoration was undertaken, with an extensive photographic record documenting every stage of the process. The body was stripped back to bare metal before receiving the necessary repairs and a high-quality repaint in its original colour. Whilst originally specified with Cherry Red trim, the decision was made during the restoration to retrim the interior in classic black leather, creating a timeless and elegant contrast with the exterior.
Mechanically, the Sprite has been carefully enhanced to improve both performance and usability. The original 948cc engine has been replaced with the more spirited and desirable 1275cc A-Series unit, complemented by the later, stronger rib-case gearbox to comfortably accommodate the additional power. Further considered upgrades include a front disc brake conversion and the installation of Frontline telescopic front dampers in place of the original lever-arm suspension, significantly improving both braking confidence and road manners without compromising the car's character.
The restoration extended far beyond the cosmetics. A new wiring loom has been fitted throughout, together with a practical alternator conversion for improved reliability. The interior has been completely renewed, including new seat covers, dashboard trim, carpets and matching black upholstery. Equally impressive is the replacement wet weather equipment, comprising a new hood, side screens and a full tonneau cover.
The finished result is nothing short of outstanding. This is a beautifully restored Frogeye Sprite that combines period charm with carefully chosen upgrades that make it every bit as enjoyable on today's roads as it would have been over sixty years ago. Light, responsive and full of character, it perfectly captures the spirit of Britain's golden era of affordable sports motoring.
Prior to delivery, the car will be supplied by us following a comprehensive major service, full health inspection and a fresh MOT, ensuring it is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian from day one.
