Overview

Designed as the entry point to the Alfa Romeo Coupe range of the time, the GT Junior has gone on to achieve a revered status amongst Alfa enthusiasts, thanks to its beautiful styling - arguably, some of the best of the period - and rev-happy 1300cc twin-cam engine, which still gave respectable performance for the era. 

Evidently, Alfa struck gold; The combination of a low-displacement engine to avoid higher tax brackets and the aforementioned enthusiast support of the period meant that the 1300 GT Junior stayed in production for over a decade, during which time it received numerous revisions and updates along the way.

This 1972 ‘Junior’ may have been outshopped with the 1300 engine, but that has now been replaced with a significantly more powerful 2.0-litre Nord ‘fast road’ engine, built by leading Alfa Romeo specialist Bob Dove Motorsports. Partially restored prior to the current owner’s tenure and then further improved during his time with the car, this is a ‘Junior’ that punches far above its weight, and offers the classic, analogous driving experience in a timeless Alfa body shell with a raft of considered upgrades to further improve the driving experience. 

History and documentation

• Due to the car having a 5-digit mileometer, the true mileage is unknown, although it's safe to assume that it's been around at least once

• Collection of invoices, totalling around 180 pages

• Notable invoices include the recent Bob Dove Motorsport ‘fast road’ engine build in 2025, as well as years of care by local (to the seller) Alfa specialist AutoBritalia

Interior

• Black leather / vinyl interior in excellent condition throughout 

• New Classic Alfa carpet set

• New inner door trims, seals, rear panels, rear parcel shelf trim and closure trim

• Classic-style radio with Bluetooth and handsfree capability 

• Upgraded speakers set into removable door pockets 

• Hazard switch installed in place of the original hand throttle lever

• The front seats have been trimmed in supple leather to mimic the vinyl rears

• The driver’s seat has benefitted from a new squab and backrest foams 

• Typically, there is some patination visible to the various controls and chrome trims throughout the cabin

• All of the timeless Veglia Borletti gauges are working as intended

• The seller notes the only known fault is that the heated rear window is inoperable due to a broken contact, but a new item with the factory fit-type heated element is included with the car

• Numerous spares are kept in the boot, such as belts and spark plugs

Exterior

• Iconic Italian style, presented in very good overall condition on account of its previous restoration 

• Recently fitted Alfa-branded mirrors

• The front end and exposed edges show some minor stone chipping

• The seller notes that there are two small indentations to the bodywork, namely one on the boot lid, and one to the lower rear quarter panel at sill level

• The paintwork on the boot shows microblistering 

• Looking along the flanks, the bodywork seems in excellent condition, save for the aforementioned tiny blemishes 

• As we’d expect to see, some of the chrome window trims and other areas show some pleasing minor patination with age

• There looks to be an indentation on the nearside ‘arm’ of the front grille trim 

• Being very particular, we’d suggest the boot lid is sitting slightly proud of both rear wings and needs adjustment

• All four of the replica GTA wheels are in great condition, wrapped in “almost-new” Toyo Proxes T1-R rubber

• Overall, a very well-presented example of the classic Alfa ‘Junior’ that is certain to turn heads 

Mechanical

• 2.0-litre Bob Dove Motorsport ‘fast road’ Nord engine build, based upon an Alfa Spider Series 4 engine

• Five-speed manual gearbox 

• Rear-wheel drive 

• Upgraded Alfaholics brakes

• 2000 GTV limited-slip differential 

• Extensively upgraded suspension with Koni shock absorbers, poly-bushes throughout, 29mm rose-jointed front ARB, rear ARB delete, and Eibach lowering springs all round, with spacers to the front for perfect stance

• Lightened and strengthened front suspension pans and rear trailing arms

• Recently fitted new Burman steering box with fresh tie rod ends

• Suspension setup by AutoBritalia which is said to be “lively and responsive, but not hard or jittery on the road” 

• The gearbox has been ‘lightly overhauled’ by AutoBritalia 

• The seller tells us that this Alfa “wants for nothing, with just about everything that could wear having been replaced either by the former owner or themselves, and significant recent expenditure with Bob Dove Motorsport

• We’re told that the aforementioned BDM engine is “free revving and very responsive, even at low speeds, having been built to be tractable and fun to drive even on normal roads, with an addictive and visceral twin-cam noise and Weber carburettor induction sound”

• A car that reportedly inspires confidence and encourages the owner to drive it to its full potential 

Summary

With its timeless styling, Italian flair and intoxicating engine note, this upgraded ‘Junior’ retains all of its charm and characteristics but with added grunt and, arguably, usability, thanks to a wealth of considered upgrades and a Bob Dove Motorsport Nord engine conversion being the proverbial cherry on the cake. 

Offered in excellent condition throughout but with one or two areas of improvement available for those who want to complete the ‘final 5 percent’ of the restoration - such as replacing the patinated chrome trims, should you desire - but ready to showcase, drive and enjoy as it sits, we have no doubt this Giulia GT Junior will attract plenty of admiration wherever it goes, and perhaps a rosette or two along the way.
