Overview

Fitting into the range between the mildly fettled Competition Package and wildly reworked GTS, the M4 CS (for Club Sport) was arguably the sweet spot of the F82 era. Cribbing from the GTS’ diet plan it made use of a lightweight CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic) bonnet, splitter, diffuser and spoiler, in addition to DTM-style 10-spoke forged alloy wheels. 

Within, CFRP returned for the door panels alongside fabric pull straps in lieu of traditional handles. A stripped-down centre console saved precious further grams, while generous lashings of Alcantara could be found throughout the cabin.  

Beneath its featherweight façade, the familiar 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six benefitted from the same forged crank, baffled sump, additional oil pump and quad exhaust as the M4 Competition had received the year before. Combined with a dedicated ECU tune and a seven-speed M DCT automatic transmission, though, its 460hp and 442lb ft of torque were now good for 0-62 in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174mph. 

These wide-ranging upgrades combined to achieve far more than the sum of their parts, imbuing the model with a real sense of purpose as a true driver’s car. Notably, however, they didn’t tip the scales in too focussed a direction, with a firm yet compliant ride (and, crucially, the retention of the rear seats) ensuring the CS remained a practical, rare but useable performance machine.

Summary

It can be hard to put a finger on the exact audience for a car like this, so broad is its appeal. Like many BMW specials before it, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see bidders who hadn’t previously considered an M4 suddenly finding their interest piqued. That’s a feeling which the lucky winner will need to get used to, the CS being one of those cars that invites its driver to keep discovering new dimensions to its character with each passing mile. 

Pleasing to see, then, that this example has clearly been enjoyed as intended. Doubly so that it’s been maintained as intended too, ensuring the next owner need have no qualms about getting stuck straight into running up the odometer themselves.
