Description
Finished in its original and particularly elegant combination of Shell Grey over Burgundy leather, this 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I is a wonderfully characterful example, showing just 38,000 miles from new and offered for sale from a private collection.
According to copies of the original build documentation and warranty card accompanying the car, chassis SRH22355 was originally ordered for the Australian market before the order was transferred prior to production. The completed car was subsequently supplied new to Jersey.
The Silver Shadow spent its early life in the Channel Islands before being registered on the UK mainland in 1982. Having passed through the hands of just three owners in the UK, the car is now offered from a private collection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars, where it has been dry stored during ownership.
As a late Series I example, it features the desirable flared rear wheel arches, introduced to provide additional clearance for radial tyres. Its Shell Grey coachwork gives the car an appropriately understated appearance, complemented by the extensive chrome brightwork, imposing Rolls-Royce grille and Spirit of Ecstasy.
Inside, the Burgundy leather has developed a wonderful degree of natural patina. The hides display the creasing and gentle cracking associated with careful use over five decades, while the burr walnut veneers, deep carpeting and traditional instrumentation retain the unmistakable atmosphere of a classic Rolls-Royce.
A discreet concession to modern usability comes in the form of an upgraded sound system incorporating a RetroSound DAB and Bluetooth radio, providing modern connectivity while remaining sympathetic to the period appearance of the dashboard.
Power comes from Rolls-Royce's 6.75-litre V8, driving through the smooth automatic transmission. Introduced as a thoroughly modern Rolls-Royce for its time, the Silver Shadow combined monocoque construction, independent suspension, sophisticated hydraulics and four-wheel disc brakes with the effortless performance and refinement traditionally associated with Crewe.
With just 38,000 miles from new and its attractive original Shell Grey over Burgundy specification, this is a very appealing late Silver Shadow I. It retains the originality and gentle patina that can so easily be lost through restoration, giving the car a great deal of character and presence.
