Now regarded as the definitive hot hatch benchmark, the Golf GTI created a whole new performance genre, offering sports car responses with hatchback practicality, and this smart 1982 Mk1 represents the model in its purest early form

Presented here in black with the model's signature red grille surround, side striping, cloth interior and fitted with the distinctive Pirelli alloy wheels

Power comes from the model's 1,780cc four-cylinder fed through a five-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels

Acquired by the consigning owner in August of 2021 from previous long-term ownership of 22 years, it was driven for a matter of weeks before being laid up in storage, where it has remained for the last five years. Consequently, we would suggest an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return this GTI to running order

At the time of cataloguing the odometer was showing 133,981 miles and the history folder pleasingly suggests that this GTI was subject to a restoration of the bodywork circa December 2009
