2003 RENAULT KANGOO

For sale is my Mother-in-Law’s Renault Kangoo (X76) Authentique – a 1.2 16v petrol manual that the previous owner to her converted into a micro-camper / day van.

She’s selling as she now only does very short trips locally, following the passing of my Father-in-law and has switched to an EV.

With a little work, this would make an excellent festival/event attender (and if we didn’t already have a tow vehicle, I’d probably be keeping it for motorbike trips to Cadwell….).

I have given it some TLC in the past as I’ve needed to borrow it for work and wanted to make sure it would get me there and back, but I’ve not spend much time investigating the ‘camper’ part of it.

The good:

Engine oil and filter changed at 116,648 miles in December 2025(<1000 miles ago) with 10w40 semi-synthetic

Air filter changed at the same time

Comes with new spare spark plugs

Fitted with a tow bar so if you are looking for a tip run car (or somewhere to camp at Cadwell Park having towed your motorbike there) – you’re in luck.

A photovoltaic cell on the roof wired to a solar controller and a leisure battery under the passenger seat (110ahfrom what I can see). This is hooked up to a 2 plug inverter and interior LED lighting. I haven’t fully investigated this, but from pressing all the switches, have established there are internal floor lights.

The bed arrangement would comfortably sleep a single 6 foot person (probably taller).

Interior cupboard spaces for camping stoves/water/washing up bowls/food etc.

Home-made blackout screens for the windows for privacy held on with suckers.

The bad:

Not all of the home-made blackout screens are present so more would need to made from reflective material, black cloth and bubble wrap.

It can take a while to catch when starting – worse when hot – but always fires. My suspicion is that this is down to repeated short journeys – it improved noticeably when used for work over longer distances with some Dipetane fuel additive!

The PAS reservoir cap is missing – a plastic bread bag is fulfilling the role much to my horror (although it hasn’t lost any fluid, so it’s clearly working). Replacement caps/full reservoirs appear to be £15-30 online.

The stereo doesn’t work (CD player), but I have a ‘known good’ spare from a different car that I’ll supply with it if it goes for a reasonable price.

I suspect either an engine or gearbox mount will need changing as there’s more ‘rock’ in the engine than I think there should be (although it’s not perished enough to be mentioned on the MOT.

The airbag light is on (although that hasn’t stopped it getting an MOT

My code reader has recorded a historical fuel trim issue – it’s been suggested that this is either an air leak in the intake of a faulty MAF sensor leading to it over-fuelling slightly. It returns about 35mpg which is less than I would have thought, so this may add weight to that theory.

My Mother-in-law has reported an occasional ‘grinding’ noise from the brakes. Neither the garage or I have experienced this despite numerous test drives, so I can’t comment on what it might be.
