[HJA Presents: Subaru STI’s Rare R205 Road Sport]

HJA are excited to offer this lovely Subaru Impreza STI R205, finished in 37J Satin White Pearl and showing 102,723 km, approximately 63,829 miles.

This particular car is R205 number 273 of only 400 examples produced, with its original numbered STI identification plaques present in both the engine bay and interior.

Developed exclusively for the Japanese market, the R205 is one of the more special cars to come from Subaru Tecnica International during the GRB generation. The “R” stood for Road Sport, with STI developing the car as a complete road-focused package rather than simply increasing the power.

This example was purchased from Japan as a Grade 4 car and presents very well for its age and mileage. More importantly for us, the underside is particularly clean, with a rust-free chassis and floorpan and none of the significant corrosion commonly seen on UK-used examples of this age.

It also comes with its original Japanese service book, manuals and supporting documentation, showing a strong maintenance record throughout its life with the majority of recorded servicing carried out by Subaru main dealers.

[R205 – BUILT AS A ROAD CAR]

The R205 followed cars such as the S203 and S204, with STI placing a strong emphasis on real-world road performance, steering response, body control and braking.

Factory output was increased to 320PS and 431Nm through an R205-specific ball-bearing twin-scroll turbocharger, dedicated ECU calibration and freer-flowing exhaust system.

The chassis was developed to match, with STI flexible reinforcement, dedicated suspension components, large Brembo brakes and R205-specific aerodynamic details. The result was a much more complete package than a regular GRB STI with additional power.

[EXTENSIVE JAPANESE SERVICE HISTORY]

The service history is a major selling point with this example and shows that the important maintenance has been kept on top of throughout its life.

Of particular note is the comprehensive work carried out at 83,104 km, when the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, timing-belt idler, auxiliary belt and tensioner were replaced along with a new set of spark plugs.

More recently, the gearbox and differential were serviced at 100,688 km, followed by fresh brake and clutch fluid at 100,785 km and an air cleaner at 100,853 km.

On arrival at HJA we have also completed a fresh engine oil and oil-filter service at the current mileage.

[WHY THIS EXAMPLE]

The condition underneath was one of the first things that stood out to us. The chassis, floorpan and suspension mounting areas are all very clean, making this a particularly appealing example for anyone familiar with the corrosion that can affect cars which have spent years being driven through British winters.

The car has also been test driven and drives exactly as we would hope an R205 should. It feels tight, responsive and properly put together, with the connected and composed character these STI-built cars are known for.

With just 400 R205s produced, finding one in the UK is unusual enough. Finding one with a clean Japanese history, extensive Subaru dealer service history, original books and manuals and an underside in this condition makes this a very appealing opportunity for anyone looking for one of Subaru Tecnica International’s rarer modern classics.
