The Yeti has a genuine cult following, and this is one of the very last built before Skoda replaced it in 2017. People love them for one reason above all: the VarioFlex rear seats. Three individual seats that slide, recline, fold flat or lift out of the car altogether, turning a compact SUV into a small van in a couple of minutes. Nothing else at this money is anywhere near as versatile, and it is exactly why good ones stay in demand. SE L Drive is the range-topping specification and it is generously equipped. This car has leather upholstery, heated front seats and a heated windscreen, bi-xenon headlamps, LED tail lights, satellite navigation, DAB radio, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, unique 17-inch alloy wheels and silver roof rails. Outdoor specification adds the protective body cladding and rugged detailing that give the Yeti its purposeful, go-anywhere look. The 1.2 TSI turbocharged petrol produces 110ps and drives through Skoda's seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, which is smooth, quick-shifting and genuinely easy in traffic. It is an economical combination, returning around 47mpg in normal driving, and being a petrol it avoids the particulate filter and emissions-zone complications that come with an older diesel. 0-62mph takes around 10.9 seconds. It also drives far better than the shape suggests. Light steering, a supple ride and a commanding, upright driving position make it as relaxed on a long run as it is easy around town, and the Yeti was a consistent class winner in owner satisfaction surveys throughout its life. Practicality goes well beyond the seats. Visibility is excellent thanks to the tall glasshouse and boxy shape, it is very easy to park, and the boot expands from 405 litres to 1,760 litres with the rear seats removed. Rear headroom is generous and the wide-opening doors make fitting child seats straightforward. This is a genuinely useful, characterful and very well-equipped small SUV, priced sensibly to reflect its three previous keepers. Cars like this are increasingly hard to find, as the Yeti has no direct replacement.
