Overview

Honda's EK9 was the first Civic to wear the Type R badge, and it's still one of the purest hot hatches ever built. A blueprinted engine, a sub-1,100kg kerbweight and a helical limited-slip differential earned it a reputation on road and circuit alike. This one lands in black, a far less common choice than the usual Championship White, so it stands apart from almost every other car in the classifieds.

This is no standard example. The vendor tells us it runs a rebuilt engine backed by a considered suite of induction, exhaust, cooling and suspension upgrades, all aimed at sharpening what the EK9 already does so well. It's been set up as a proper fast-road and track car while keeping its JDM character firmly intact.

Inside, the red Recaro buckets, red carpets and titanium gear knob give the cabin genuine occasion, and it all hangs together nicely. The engine bay is clean and neatly detailed, and the shell is a genuine EK9 confirmed by its chassis plate. It's a lovely, individual take on a car that's fast becoming a modern classic.

The upshot is a rare Type R that looks tidy inside and out, and it's ready to enjoy the moment you turn the key.

History and Documentation

  • First registered in the UK on 24 August 2000, having been imported from Japan

  • Documented invoices and maintenance comprise a Grasshopper Pro-Sport exhaust (February 2003), Grasshopper Pro-Sport fitting work (headlights, rear lights, coilovers and wheel alignment, a manifold, an arch liner and an oil and filter change), Spoon and performance parts from Tokyo Express (January 2007), a speedometer conversion to miles (March 2019), and Falcon Engineering maintenance (April 2021 at an indicated 67,641 miles) covering brake fluid, gearbox oil with a Liqui Moly additive, a coolant flush and refill and new tyres

  • The vendor tells us the engine was rebuilt with OEM Honda parts, including a new cambelt and water pump, with around 1,800 miles covered since

  • Vendor-reported modifications include a Spoon ECU, a Carbon Whale intake, a Skunk2 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, a Fujitsubo exhaust, a Jun manifold, a DC front strut brace, an aluminium radiator, adjustable coilover suspension, an S80 limited-slip differential gearbox and a Stage 2 clutch

  • Supplied with a V5C, two keys and a folder of MOT certificates and specialist invoices

  • Current MOT until 21 July 2027

  • HPI clear

  • Indicated mileage of 67,984 miles

Interior

  • The black cabin pairs red Recaro front buckets with a red rear bench, red carpets and carbon-fibre-effect trim

  • The Type R instrument cluster reads around 67,984 miles with no warning lamps showing

  • A red-accented steering wheel sits ahead of a titanium gear knob on a short-throw shifter

  • The driver's seat bolster has softened slightly, though the fabric is intact with no split stitching

  • Equipment includes air conditioning and electric windows; an aftermarket head unit is fitted in place of the original

  • The dash, vents, glovebox and grey headlining are clean, with sound door cards trimmed in red suede

  • Minor chips are noted to a painted door edge and the B-pillar shut

Exterior

  • Finished in a shade of black that gives this EK9 a lower-key, individual look

  • Paintwork presents glossily across straight panels with even shut lines; the front and rear bumpers are believed to have been repainted

  • The factory grille, clear headlights and a red Honda "H" badge sit up front, with "Civic Type R" decals and colour-coded skirts along the sides

  • A factory-style tailgate spoiler, red and clear rear lights and a single centre-exit tailpipe finish the rear

  • White multi-spoke alloys with red "H" centre caps wear Yokohama Advan tyres with good, even tread

  • A very small scratch is noted on the roof, with light kerbing to one wheel lip

  • The underside is clean and evenly protected, with only light surface rust on a few fasteners and the battery tray

Mechanical

  • The vendor tells us the original engine has been replaced with a rebuilt B18C6, freshened with OEM Honda parts including a new cambelt and water pump, with around 1,800 miles covered since

  • In standard form the EK9 Type R is a high-revving, naturally aspirated front-driver with a helical limited-slip differential and double wishbone suspension

  • Drive goes to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, with a vendor-reported S80 limited-slip differential and a Stage 2 clutch

  • Vendor-reported induction and cooling upgrades include a Spoon ECU, a Carbon Whale intake, an aluminium radiator and a carbon-fibre spark-plug cover

  • A Skunk2 4-2-1 tubular exhaust manifold feeds a vendor-reported Fujitsubo exhaust system, with a Jun manifold also fitted

  • Handling upgrades comprise adjustable coilover suspension, polished aluminium adjustable lower arms, an adjustable camber top mount and a DC front strut brace

  • The engine bay presents cleanly and is carefully detailed, with no visible leaks

  • The vendor reports it starts, goes and stops well with nothing further to add

  • The most recent recorded maintenance was in April 2021 with Falcon Engineering, covering brake fluid, gearbox oil, a coolant flush and new tyres

Summary

This EK9 stands out for its condition and its individual, well-sorted specification. It's a rare chance to own an original JDM Type R that's been developed with care and finished in an unusual shade of black that sets it apart from the familiar Championship White cars. The cabin and engine bay both present well, and the shell is a genuine EK9. It comes with a documented history file, and it's ready to be enjoyed on road or track from day one.
