Rapid charging at up to 100kW takes it from low to 80 percent in around 35 minutes, while the 11kW onboard charger fills it overnight at home - quicker than most rivals of its era, which were limited to 7kW. It is also better to drive than most electric hatchbacks, because the motor sits at the back and drives the rear wheels. That brings strong traction, balanced handling and a remarkably tight turning circle for town work. 204ps and 310Nm give 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, in near silence. Practicality is excellent, with a 385-litre boot and a flat floor giving generous rear legroom. Volkswagen's high-voltage battery warranty runs for 8 years or 100,000 miles and transfers to you, giving cover into 2028 on the most expensive component in the car.
