Overview

It's common knowledge that the M5 remains one of the finest performance cars to ever grace tarmac but now that BMW has fully embraced the hybrid powertrain for its seminal super saloon it would seem that the pure visceral joy of a large, naturally aspirated version is a thing of the past. That's OK though, because there are still plenty of E60 M5s to choose from for those hankering after a more unadulterated experience and this particular 2006 example is a superb representation of the marque.

Ever since the first incarnation in the form of the E28 M5 back in the '80s the idea of a comfortable, luxury saloon with supercar-beating performance has been an incredibly alluring one and for many the E60 variant is arguably the sweet spot in this most revered of line-ups. Loaded with enough tech without being too imperious it's all still analogue enough to be inherently engaging and beautifully rewarding but it's that glorious 500bhp V10 engine that's the car's tour de force and the sound of all ten cylinders going full send will forever stir the soul.
