Description
During the 1960s, Ford aimed to elevate its motorsport reputation by commissioning Lotus boss Colin Chapman to develop a competition version of the Cortina. The resulting Lotus Cortina was equipped with a twin-cam 1.6-liter engine and retained McPherson strut front suspension with revised spring and damper rates. The rear leaf springs were replaced by a coil-spring and damper unit. This configuration produced a highly competitive vehicle that rapidly emerged as a leading contender in racing, frequently competing for overall honors.
This Lotus Cortina presented here 'JTW 498C' is the original works racing saloon, campaigned by Formula 1 World Champion Jim Clark. It was also driven by touring car champions Sir John Whitmore and “Gentleman” Jack Sears as part of the 1965 Lotus works team, reflecting its significant motor racing pedigree. In 1965, it competed in the British Saloon Car Championship, driven by Jack Sears at Goodwood and Snetterton, Jim Clark at Silverstone and Brands Hatch, and John Whitmore at Oulton Park.
'JTW 498C' has been professionally restored, with significant work completed by Exway Coachworks of Exmouth, a leading Lotus Cortina specialist. The car underwent a comprehensive body restoration in 2003 and 2004. Pat Thomas of Kelvedon Motors fully rebuilt the engine to full race specification. After the restoration, 'JTW 498C' participated in hill climbs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2008, 2012, and 2013.
This Lotus Cortina helped prove the Ford-Lotus partnership and strengthened Ford's motorsport image.
