1970 PORSCHE 914

DUE IN NEXT WEEK. Built in the morning of Thursday November 12 1970, this Left hand drive model was the 13th 914 to be completed that day.

Originally a 914/ 4. This car was a special order that included Minilites and Limited Slip Diff. Porsche - Audi USA acquired it for their client to run in Porsche Club America events. At the Porsche Club USA Hill Climb 1971 it won its class. Finished 3rd on the Sawtooth Rally, 2nd in the Cheapeake challenge Rally, and then winning it's class in the Porsche Club USA Porsche ‘parade’ event in 1972. Coming 7th overall and winning the Hoffman Parade Cup (The Hoffman cup – ‘Max Hoffman being the early importer of Porsches in the USA since the 1950’s).

The car was brought to the UK in 1993 by Henry Pearman (Jaguar and Porsche 956 specialist). It was then partially restored and the original black was swapped for Silver. On 24 August 1994 it was bought by a UK Porsche Club member and began a 26 year ownership.

The LSD was rebuilt in 2000 by Gantspeed.

In 2011 the paintwork and body work was sympathetically restored keeping the original bodyshell as unmolested as possible.

The present owner and author of the book Porsche the racing 914's Roy Smith, acquired the car in March 2020, and in 2022 commissioned Porsche 914 specialist Greatworth Classics to convert the power unit from 4 cylinder to a period (1973) totally re built 2.7 Litre six cylinder. In essence recreating the legendary 914-6.

The car is supplied with a detailed history from the very day of production.

Brilliant for touring or classic road rallying.

Featured in promos for shows and in articles in magazines, starting in 2000. The latest being a feature in the Classic Porsche Magazine July 2024.

Rarely do we see cars with such an historic pedigree.

The development of the Porsche 914 was a joint effort by Porsche and Volkswagen and, from the model year 1970, the vehicle was the new entry-level Porsche model.

The two-seater, also known as the VW-Porsche, was a mid-engine sports car with striking design features including a wheelbase that was very long in proportion to the vehicle's length, short overhangs, a removable mid-section of the roof, which was made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, and a wide safety bar. The 914 also featured pop-up headlights.

At its launch, the 914 was available with two engines.

The 914 featured a 1. 7-litre four-cylinder Volkswagen boxer engine delivering 80 PS

The 914/ 6 had a 2. 0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine from the Porsche 911 T with 110 PS

In the model year 1973 a 2. 0-litre, 100-PS four-cylinder engine based on the 1. 7-litre engine was released, and in the model year 1974 a 1. 8-litre, 85-PS four-cylinder engine followed.

Over 118, 000 units of the four-cylinder 914/ 4 were built, making it a major commercial success, while the rarer six-cylinder 914/ 6 saw just over 3, 300 units produced before ending in 1972.

This version with a 2. 7 engine fitted absolutely flies and is as quick as many race/ rally versions

The basic 914 (914/ 4) was manufactured by the coachbuilder Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.
