1972 BMW 3000

We are very proud to offer for sale this wonderful 3.0 CSL (PUL). This lightweight E9 3.0 coupe is very special to us at Munich Legends. Having been a local car all its life – it was owned ‘back in the day’ by the father of our dent tech – this lovely CSL was fortunate enough to retain all its original panels throughout its life. It also has matching chassis and engine numbers. The limited run of lightweight E9 coupes (of which there are estimated to be less than 250 in RHD left worldwide) makes the CSL incredibly rare, but those still with genuine matching numbers are almost non-existent. CSLs with traceable provenance are even rarer.

It is believed that this particular coupe may have been supplied from new by the Ashdown Garage – now Munich Legends HQ – then home of one of the first BMW dealerships in the UK. Some lovely period photos exist of this rare car, which adds a wonderful back story to this special piece of motoring history (including a certain young dent technician standing by the car on holiday).

In 2011 Munich Legends were commissioned to carry out a total bare shell ‘nut and bolt’ restoration, by one of the country’s leading car collectors. This included not just a full repaint inside and out, retrimmed seats, refurbished wood trims, new carpets and console vinyl, but also a full ‘top and bottom’ engine rebuild, taking care to retain the vital original components. Every hose, brake and fuel line, suspension component, nut and bolt is new, or refurbished ‘as new’ if irreplaceable. The project was undertaken by the Munich Legends team with the unswerving goal to make this signature car the best in the country. The restoration took over a year, but the results speak for themselves. A full pictorial story board of the restoration was made as it progressed, with meticulous attention to detail. This lovely photo album is available with the car and forms a vital part of its history. The car has been showed on many occasions, and we believe it to be one of – if not ‘the’ – finest example of a RHD E9 3.0L CSL in existence.

More recently a new owner became the proud guardian of PUL. As a collector, A 3.0 CSL was always on his bucket list, and finally in 2024 his dream came true. Unfortunately, life changes and different circumstances mean that he has now asked the Munich Legends team to find PUL the appropriate new home. We don’t need to be asked twice! This is without doubt one of our favourite cars.

Presented in faultless Chamonix white paintwork, and spotless CSL black vinyl, Scheel and wood interior, everything on this car is as beautiful as the day it left the factory (but with better quality oil and rubber!). The drive is wonderful – tight, focussed and fluid – exactly as it was meant to be. The suspension is set up with gas Bilstein shocks and progressive rate springs meaning this CSL drives exactly as it was designed to by the makers, as a thrilling lightweight homologation version of a globe conquering masterpiece.
