EXTERIOR

The familiar elegance of the R107 takes on a far more sporting character here, with deep red paintwork accentuating the period AMG aerodynamic additions, a deeper front spoiler, sculpted side skirts, matching rear apron and distinctive boot spoiler giving the SL a much broader and more assertive stance without losing the proportions that make the original design so recognisable.

The bodywork presents exceptionally well overall, with the paint retaining impressive depth and lustre and the contrasting black trim remaining crisp throughout. Red-centred five-spoke AMG/Penta-style wheels with polished rims complete the wonderfully evocative 1980s aesthetic, while the AMG boot badge and Stratton AMG identification across the rear screen provide further period intrigue.

The colour-matched factory hardtop is also present, transforming the car into an equally elegant and substantial two-door coupé when fitted.

INTERIOR

The cabin feels every bit as bespoke as the exterior, with the familiar R107 architecture transformed through a more individual AMG treatment. The standard Mercedes seats remain, retrimmed in cream leather with deep red pleated centres and contrasting piping, while the rear seats and door cards follow the same theme.

A smaller sports steering wheel, bespoke instrument faces and AMG detailing around the cabin give it a much more purposeful period feel without losing the underlying Mercedes character.

Red trim continues across the dashboard, centre console and carpeting, tying the interior together and giving it a level of individuality far beyond the normal factory specification. The result is distinctly 1980s AMG: full of character and exactly the sort of individuality that made early AMG conversions so appealing.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Beneath the bonnet sits Mercedes-Benz’s 5.0L V8, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic. Smooth, muscular and effortlessly composed, it delivers strong torque with an easy, long-legged character. As the revs rise, the V8 develops a rich, cultured note that feels perfectly matched to the R107’s substantial presence.

More recently, the 500 SL received a thorough service in July 2026 at 82,777 miles, with attention including fresh engine oil and filter, a new fuel filter, spark plugs and replacement belts.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Five-spoke AMG/Penta-style alloy wheels form an important part of the car’s period appearance, their red-painted centres tying neatly into the bodywork while polished outer rims provide a crisp contrast. The tyres remain in excellent condition, with strong tread remaining throughout.

The wheels present very well overall, with the polished rims and colour-coded centres complementing the AMG bodywork beautifully. Combined with the lower stance and fuller arches, they give the R107 considerably more presence while remaining entirely in keeping with its 1980s character.

HISTORY FILE

First delivered to Stratton of Wilmslow in 1985, this Mercedes-Benz 500 SL AMG has spent much of its life in the UK, with the majority of its 82k miles accumulated during its earlier years. More recently its use has been considerably lighter, covering only around 1,000 miles over the last 16 years, suggesting an extended period of careful storage and occasional use.

With relatively little use in recent years, the 500 SL was treated to a comprehensive service in July 2026 at 82,777 miles. This included fresh engine oil and filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and replacement belts, Giving the car a clean bit of health.

Further adding to its provenance, the car previously formed part of a notable UK collection, whose owner held a particular enthusiasm for the creations of AMG and Brabus. Given its specification and period character, it was an entirely fitting addition.

Today the car remains a wonderfully distinctive example of the independent AMG era, combining the character of a factory right-hand-drive 500 SL with the bold, individual specification that made these early AMG conversions so memorable.
