A genuinely stunning example of the iconic first-year second-generation Ford F-150 SVT Lightning. This is a very reluctant sale, with the truck only being offered due to an ongoing house renovation.

The Lightning is a seriously special truck and becoming increasingly difficult to find in this sort of condition. Powered by Ford’s supercharged 5.4-litre V8, the Lightning was developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) as a genuine high-performance pickup.

Condition & Maintenance

The truck has been extremely well looked after both during my ownership and by its previous owners.

It doesn’t come with a huge folder of service paperwork. The owner prior to the gentleman I purchased it from had the vehicle through his company, where it was regularly maintained and serviced. I have personally met and spoken with him about the truck and its history, and it was clearly very well cared for.

Since purchasing it, I’ve continued to maintain it regardless of cost and have spent considerable time and money getting it into the condition it is today.

Work during my ownership includes:

Full underside treatment and undersealing

Engine thoroughly gone through and overhauled where required

Small oil leak professionally investigated and completely rectified

New rear brake calipers and brakes

Regular servicing and maintenance as required

Meticulously cleaned throughout my ownership – generally washed weekly

Recent professional paint and bodywork

Roof completely refinished/repainted

Front bumper refinished/repainted

Rear bumper refinished/repainted

Grilles refinished

Full professional paint correction carried out afterwards

The recent paintwork wasn’t carried out following accident damage. It was simply because, being a 1999 vehicle, some areas were beginning to show general age-related deterioration and a loss of finish. Rather than leave these areas to worsen, I decided to have them professionally dealt with properly.

Once this work was completed, the entire vehicle was professionally paint corrected, leaving the overall paintwork in genuinely exceptional condition.

The result is what I genuinely believe to be one of the best-presented 1999 Lightnings currently available. The paintwork is absolutely stunning and the photographs really don’t do the truck justice – it needs to be seen in person to appreciate just how well it presents.

Naturally, this is a 27-year-old vehicle, so there are a handful of minor age-related marks and signs of wear if you go looking for them. I’m not trying to describe it as a brand-new truck. However, for its age, it is an exceptionally straight, clean and honest example.

Upgrades & Performance

The truck has also had a few upgrades that really add to its character:

Larger aftermarket alloy wheels, giving the truck a much more purposeful stance

Full stainless-steel exhaust system

Potential upgraded supercharger pulley – see below

The stainless exhaust completely transforms the character of the truck. It sounds incredible and is seriously loud, so this certainly isn’t the Lightning for somebody looking for something quiet and subtle. The supercharged V8 combined with the stainless system gives it a huge amount of presence.

I also believe the supercharger pulley may have been changed/upgraded at some point. This was pointed out during discussions with my mechanic and could mean the truck is running more boost than the standard factory setup.

I want to be completely transparent, though: I haven’t personally fitted the pulley, I don’t have paperwork confirming the modification and the truck hasn’t been dyno tested during my ownership. Therefore, I’m not going to advertise a horsepower or boost figure that I can’t substantiate.

What I can say is that the truck feels seriously strong.

For a real-world comparison, it has been driven alongside a friend’s 2010 BMW E92 M3 Competition in a straight-line pull, and there was very little between the two – the M3 could only just keep with it. Obviously, this isn’t intended as a scientific performance claim, but it gives a good indication of just how strong this particular Lightning feels.

For something of this size and age, the performance still surprises people.

1999 SVT Lightning

The 1999 model is particularly interesting as it was the launch year of the second-generation SVT Lightning.

Factory specification includes the 5.4-litre supercharged V8, automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive and SVT-developed suspension and braking, giving the Lightning performance that was extraordinary for a full-size pickup when it was launched.

It combines the character and practicality of an American pickup with the noise, performance and presence of a proper SVT performance vehicle.

These trucks are now becoming genuine modern American classics, particularly clean and well-maintained examples.

Overall

With 95,000 miles, this is an exceptionally well-presented example that has clearly been cared for rather than simply used.

It’s an incredibly enjoyable vehicle to own and gets attention everywhere it goes. Between the stance, supercharged V8, stainless exhaust and performance, you certainly won’t go anywhere unnoticed in it.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and it’s genuinely a shame to see it go.

I’m only selling because our house renovation means priorities have changed. Otherwise, I’d happily keep it.
