Built as a road-legal, track-focused evolution of the M4, the GTS was produced in strictly limited numbers worldwide, with just 30 examples delivered to the UK. It was never intended to be an ordinary M4, virtually every aspect of the car was engineered with performance in mind. At its heart is BMW's 3.0-litre twin turbocharged straight-six, producing approximately 493bhp and 443lb-ft of torque, paired with the lightning-fast 7-speed DCT transmission with paddle shift. The M4 GTS also introduced BMW's innovative water-injection system, allowing higher boost pressures and helping unlock substantially greater performance from the S55 engine.

The chassis received equally serious attention. The GTS features adjustable coilover suspension, bespoke anti-roll bars, revised damper calibration and extensive chassis upgrades, creating a car designed to deliver extraordinary levels of precision on circuit while remaining fully road legal. Weight reduction was another key part of the GTS formula. The bonnet, roof and boot lid are constructed from carbon fibre, while the rear seats were removed and replaced by a roll cage. Combined with numerous other weight-saving measures, the result is a machine approximately 30kg lighter than a standard M4.
