This 1983 Golf GTI Mk1 is accompanied by an extensive maintenance and restoration file containing receipts dating back more than 25 years, documenting long-term care by main dealers and marque specialists. The defining feature of this example is its comprehensive professional restoration, carried out by Retro Classica in 2010. This was a windows-out, engine-out restoration covering the body structure, chassis areas, engine and interior. The body was stripped back to bare metal before being prepared and refinished in Alpine White, including the door apertures, door edges, underside of the bonnet and engine compartment. The engine was removed and restored as part of the project before being reinstalled, while the interior was also restored and reassembled. The restoration is supported by a photographic record showing the bodywork, engine bay and cabin on completion. The history file documents substantial ongoing maintenance, with numerous replacement parts fitted over the years by Volkswagen marque specialist John Austin of Colchester. More recent work includes replacement of the cambelt kit in 2021. Prior to sale the car has received a fresh engine service and a brand-new battery. Specification is particularly attractive for a Mk1 GTI and includes 14-inch Pirelli P-slot alloy wheels, sunroof, four-headlamp grille, front fog lamps and the original Pioneer cassette stereo with graphic equaliser. Further period equipment includes an electric aerial, lockable petrol cap, VW over-mats, rear wash/wipe, heated rear screen and adjustable door mirrors. The cabin retains the recognised GTI specification with striped sports seats, GTI sports steering wheel, golf-ball gear knob, rev counter and centre console. Externally, the car retains its black wheelarch extensions and bodyside mouldings, front air dam, red-trimmed grille and GTI badging. Its 1.8-litre fuel-injected engine is paired with the 5-speed manual gearbox, GTI sports suspension and ventilated front disc brakes. A matching set of Nankang Noble Sport tyres is fitted with good tread. Now showing 142,050 miles, the mileage is best considered alongside the documented restoration and extensive long-term maintenance record. The car presents extremely well cosmetically and will be supplied with a fresh MOT. Previous MOT history is strong, with limited advisories which have been rectified.
