Overview

Maserati's Coupe arrived in 2002 as the Tipo M138, though most of us simply call it the 4200 and leave it at that. Giugiaro's Italdesign shape, derived from the 3200 GT, wraps a genuine 2+2 with usable rear seats and a boot for two sets of golf clubs. Up front sits a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 with a dry sump, good for 385bhp at 7,000rpm and 333lb ft of torque.

That's enough for 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and 177mph flat out, with drive heading to the rear wheels through a six-speed transaxle. Here it's the Cambiocorsa, Maserati's F1-style paddle-shift automated manual, so every pull of a paddle sets that V8 barking like it means it. Within the speed limit, obviously, though we won't judge the odd tunnel.

This 2004 UK car wears grey metallic over light cream leather, with navy piping and navy accents across the doors and dash. Step inside and you'll see why we're smitten, because the classic 4200 grand-tourer cabin looks just as Maserati intended it to. Trident-embossed headrests and pleated seat centres sit beneath a taut roof lining, while the switchgear wears crisp, clear labels you can read at a glance.

Almost £13,000 of specialist work in 2023 goes a long way to explaining how well this one presents today. Fancy a V8 grand tourer you can actually fit your mates in, with a soundtrack loud enough to drown out their opinions? With 38,867 miles showing and a cabin this fresh, it looks every inch the part and is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
